SG Lovers Only: Your Perfect SG

Re: SG Lovers Only: Your Perfect SG

I liked the old-style Supremes with the "centered" burst a lot better... but there was one with an orange/yellow sunburst and two P-90s... wow.

Very nice.

As far as the new neck joint, that's one of the things Gibson did in 1970, when they basically ruined the SG for a few years (they also changed a few other things for the worse too). SG's and a 22nd fret neck/body juncture is a perfect match, the way the heavens meant SG's to be, and woe to those that fool around with perfection.

Does that have anything to do with how they ruined SGs in the 70s? The Standard has had that neck joint for a long time now and I don't think anyone aside from you has ever claimed it has a detrimental effect on the guitar. Do you have any experience with it aside from your epiphones?

Re: SG Lovers Only: Your Perfect SG

I would think Wonker's ideal SG would be an SG-X like the one i've got:

I'm trying to find a picture of my favorite SG in the world but i couldn't find the EXACT one...it's basically this thing but in the SG Custom configuration...y'know, block inlays, Tune-o-matic bridge and a trio of 57 Classic's. Replace that middle humbucker with a Phat Cat and get a switching system that makes sense in there and it'd be flawless!

Of course, this SG Special version of the emerald sparkle finish would be perfectly awesome too.

Re: SG Lovers Only: Your Perfect SG

Well, it'd be white or wine red, thicker than the norm, almost as thick as a LP, coil tapping on the pickups, chrome or black hardware, '61 type of pickguard, Dunlop 6100 frets, ebony board, Custom style markers. Oh, and a stop tailpiece with the stud about an inch & a half longer than the normal type.

I'd love an SG-X I just can never find one when I want to buy something.

I'm also looking for an '91 Reissue SG Jr. the one with the tune-o-matic/stoptail not the wrap around bridge.

Re: SG Lovers Only: Your Perfect SG

^ true those reissues are great. i recently saw a Les Paul Special from that era...same as a 50's model just with a tune-o-matic / stoptail set-up and the same shade of green as my SG...had to let it get away tho :(

In the early 1970's they sunk the neck deeper into the body of SG's, instead of using a longer tenon, along with putting the neck in the same plane with the body and adding a plastic cover plate in front of the guitar. These were an immediate flop commercially and were widely regarded as the ugliest guitars Gibson had ever made (this was before the Reverse V, Reverse Explorer, and Zoot Suits). To counteract the sudden plunge in SG sales, Gibson started to gradually return to the 1960's designs bit by bit, which didn't completely happen until the early 1980's. Then all was good again.

There is no need for SG's to have a neck/body juncture at anything less than the 22nd fret. It's worked fine for the last 25 years. It's what the public wants & expects from an SG.

The first part is irrelevant. I didn't ask you to explain why 70's SGs sucked, only how the new neck joint on the Standards (which has been there since the 90's IIRC) has anything to do with the 70's SGs. The fact of the matter is the current Standards are much more like the 60's SGs than the 70's. It's basically just a 60's Standard with a stronger neck joint, still tilted back and nothing like a 70's SG.

Like I said, I've never heard of anyone else complain about the current neck joint on the Standards. The fact you repeatedly take my argument and completely misunderstand it, write some rambling response and then try to tell someone that actually owns an SG what SG owners want leads me to conclude that its not worth trying to have a discussion with you.

Funny, that's just what I was thinking about your post.

Re: SG Lovers Only: Your Perfect SG

I don't like the look of the supreme at all, too fancy for an SG. The classic is a much better looking guitar.

Well, the Supreme's certainly not for everyone. For an SG collector or fanatic, it's nice, but if the average guy wants an SG or two, it probably won't be a Supreme. Hard to beat the looks of a red Std or white Custom.

Re: SG Lovers Only: Your Perfect SG

Let's say you had unlimited cash to build the SG of your dreams. What would it be like? Provide as many specs as possible, along with the kind of music you'd be playing on it. Also, take a guess as to how much it would actually cost to purchase such an SG.

Faded.. I'm a huge fan of unfinished necks.

Re: SG Lovers Only: Your Perfect SG

A guy brought one to a jam a couple of years ago that impressed the snot out of me. It mostly was like a 61 ri except...in white limba.

The same pale yellow wood you usually see for V's and early Explorers makes a great SG.

So I'd want one like that: Korina body, JB and '59 p'ups, traditional trapezoid inlays, small pickguard. It was gorgeous.

I play about what would happen if Stevie Ray Vaughan joined Pink Floyd.

Knowing the guy who had that guitar, I can probably get it for around a thousand if I ever have it and am around when he gets frustrated trying to play something too hard for him.

Something like this?

I'd like one like that but in white.
