SG or Wildkat?

I play a classic rock-y style with my band and am trying to finally upgrade from my current guitar. Should I get a Epiphone SG or an Epiphone Wildkat? They both look and sound so amazing! Please help.

Re: SG or Wildkat?

Dude, SG every time. It's so lightweight, easy to play and fits really well on a lot of people. The wildkat may not look right in a rock band either. You can get an SG and throw in a set of GFS mean 90's if you need a low cost p90 tone (which is great for a lot of styles, ask neil young). An SG and some replacement pickups can do just about anything you want them to.

Re: SG or Wildkat?

The thread question is like saying, "Should I buy a strat, or a mustang?". Really? You have to ask? I'm thoroughly surprised with some of the posts here. I thought that members were more enlightened than what I'm presently seeing. Nothing personal but, I'm going to have to stop replying if the posters don't do their own due diligence before asking these questions.

Re: SG or Wildkat?

It really just depends on what you mean by classic rock. If you're playing as far back as the Beatles, I'd go with the Wildkat or a Casino. If you're looking at more of a 70's type of rock, then the SG or a Les Paul maybe more in your wheelhouse. If it's a bit of both, I'd personally go with the P90's. It's easier to replicate the 70's tone on a good P90 than it is to repli

SG. Don't know of another guitar with better high-fret access. I have a few Epi SG's, a lot of guitar for the money. Good quality & well made. New they're a fair price, and there's plenty of deals on used ones. PU's that work well in them are a Duncan '59 set (used they can go for around half price), or as was pointed out, a GFS Mean 90 set for the SG Special sound. You can get a nice-sounding guitar without spending a lot of money.

Do what you gotta do, dude. This is part of the OP's 'due diligence.' Nothing personal either, but I'm not impressed by SRV or his fan boys.

Re: SG or Wildkat?

Wildkat. Because everyone else said SG. Dare to be different.

...also dare to hate the tone of it if you are going for AC/DC or Black Sabbath version of classic rock.

Re: SG or Wildkat?

I don't have much experience with SGs, but I did play several Wildkats when I was shopping for a semi-hollow last year. Like you said, they look and sound pretty cool... and I really WANTED to like them, but I just couldn't bond with any. I did kind of like their ES339 P-90 Pros, though... sounded & felt great! But if my choices were SG or Wildkat, I'd personally go for the SG.

Also, plus one more for P-90s... they really are sweet pickups, and the Epis sound pretty good IMO.

Talking to someone as if they're an idiot seems to go against your "nothing personal" statement. The OP's question sure seemed like a good one to me, and the only dumb questions are the ones that go unasked. If you can't keep yourself from feeling disdain for people with less experience or different tastes from your own, perhaps you could at least refrain from insulting them and killing the spirit of helpfulness that we like to project here on the SDUGF.

Nothing personal...

SG all the way

SG all the way

How can a Wildcak compete with an SG......... pop, rock, blues , and Toni. What more can you ask for out of a guitar!

Re: SG or Wildkat?

I find the Wildkat more comfortable to play than the SG personally.

I was going to say SG but you make a good point as "Classic Rock" is a term that could mean something different to the OP (I always assumed "Classic Rock" was 70s to early 80s rock...)

Includes the latter half of the 1960's too. There was a lot of great rock coming out in the late 1960's (Zeppelin, Hendrix, Cream, Jeff Beck, Fleetwood Mac, Ten Years After, Pink Floyd, etc).

Agreed. The mods (of which I am one) and admins don't go for people bagging on one another here.
Respect given and shared, without regard for level of expertise.
Be cool, dude.

Lol! Couldn't have said it better myself....

The O.P. is asking for input regarding whether he should buy a Epi. S.G. or a Wildcat. He's a new member to the forum & for all we know he could be a 15 year old kid who's about to get his first decent guitar? As far as I'm concerned coming on the forum & asking questions is doing his due diligence. I can't see any benefit in belittling him or his post.

But hay, feel free not to post in the future, I'm sure MegaloMania will get by fine without your input....

That said, welcome to the forum!!! Personally I think the S.G., for all the pre-mentioned reasons. Wildcats are very cool guitars but I don't know that I'd want one unless I already had the basics covered? Mainly a solid body with singles and a solid body with humbuckers? If you already have something close to the S.G. then perhaps look into the Wildcat. Otherwise the S.G. will give you a much more versatile guitar and cover a lot more ground for you musically...

Re: SG or Wildkat?

'Nothing personal' but people without any talent of their own generally aren't.

Back and at it again. So you know my talent level? You need to listen to more guitarists if you think SRV was anything but a slightly above-average blues player. There's a whole big world of incredible players out there.
