SH-5 Custom or SH-14 Custom 5

Re: SH-5 Custom or SH-14 Custom 5

As a previous owner of that combo I have to tell you to bring up those damn mids! I think that's what's giving you that muddy tone....I used a DD in mahogony Parker in that same combo and it was in no way flubby..... bring the mids up and dial back the bass and treble.....will work wonders brother.....

Re: SH-5 Custom or SH-14 Custom 5

That's what I was going to say. The whole 5150/6505 family is anything but muddy, to my ears, even under insane amounts of distortion. Bump those mids, man.

Re: SH-5 Custom or SH-14 Custom 5

As for a neck pick up it's really just preference. 59/Jazz/AII Pro/PG, lots can work. I've used the Jazz and AII Pro and like them best with the Custom but that's just me. I'd say the Jazz is best if you plan to shred alot with the neck pup and AII Pro is best if you prefer the neck for thicker more feely stuff. Both sound great in the middle and clean. For me, the 59 was too boomy and the PG too sizzly.

The mids look fine but I would consider raising them. What is your gain set too. With a distortio set over 5 and your asking for trouble. When I use distortion on the lead channel I set it around 3.5 no more than 4. Also turn your presence down and your highs up

Ahh thank you sir, I shall give that a try.

Thanks for the info man, I'm probably going to use it for clean mostly. From what you described the Jazz seems like the way to go

Re: SH-5 Custom or SH-14 Custom 5

Alright so I tried out what everyone said with the settings, and it did clean up the mud really well. I have the settings at: presence-5; resonance-2; high-5; mid-7; low-4; gain-5. Any adjustments that I could make?

Re: SH-5 Custom or SH-14 Custom 5

Custom/Jazz combo, you can't go wrong!

And if you want that pushed in the direction of more vintagey, go with a C5/PGn.

I've had a couple LP's set up like that for a long time...heavy..Custom/Jazz.....less heavy C5/PG or Brobucker/PG. You can't go wrong with almost any good Duncan combo, but those are two that rock and are never wasted money.

If I were to buy a humbucker set tomorrow, I'd probably order a C/59 hybrid/PGn in nickel. There's some pickup sets that will kill in any guitar for any style, and I think that would for sure.

Hello gentlemen,

I have a frankenstein lp copy for my son to tinker with. We are planning on gutting it new 500 k push pull pots, purchased 500 k volume pots but may go with 1 mega can't decide, new usa switch, a couple of orange disc tone caps .022uf, painting the cavaties copper shielding on the covers, grover locking tuners, tusq xl nut and a new switchcraft 1/4" output jack. I'm looking at the SH-14 for the bridge and I have a new in the box Custom SH-5 both with Alnico 5's I believe. Should I get a different SD PUP for the neck? I have no idea what that combo would sould like. I don't mind picking up a different SD PUP for the neck(Custom Jazz Combo or PG C5) just curious what you gentlemen think about using those particular PUPS in that configuration. He usually runs a 5150 Quad Cab with the factory Sheffields and a Peavey Valveking II (100 watt) head. It's neat watching these teenagers start chasing Tone by the way. I get to live vicariously through them. His band plays just about everything from (Aerosmith, Wheezer, 90's Seattle, GNR, Frampton and Joe Walsh, a few Oasis, Eagles to Punk and their own originals). I can hang on to the Custom SH-5 for use down the road just don't want to waste my time on something someone here knows will sound like crap. Thanks in advance. Charles aka (dad)

The body of the lp copy is ashwood with a rosewood frettboard.

Welcome to the forum!

You may get more responses by starting your own thread. But I like the Custom/Jazz combo for his LP. You should be able to get the sounds you (and he) wants.
