It can be bright sounding, but it depends on the guitar. I've never tried it in alder, though. If it is, your next step is swapping the magnet or the tone capacitor. If you like the character of the pickup and want to just roll off some high end, put in a bigger capacitor. If you want to tweak the character of the pickup, swap the magnet.
The only difference between the SH-5, SH-11, and SH-14 is the magnet. And you can change it out for ten bucks and fifteen minutes. I like the Distortion and the JB (which are allegedly the same wind), but I like the Custom better, and I think it's much more versatile.
