Do these use alnico 3 pickups?

Re: Shoot out w/Eric Johnson: New Fender American Vintage 56 Strat vs. Old 57 Strat

I know for a fact 57 and on strat pickups were A5 with formvar wire. I believe they used A3 only for the 54 and maybe 55 strats. I would safely assume they're A5

Good.

That's the only thing I'd change about the Eric Johnson Strats: the alnico 3 neck and middle pickups.

Thanks!

Did some digging. Fall of 1956 was the transitional point from ash to alder and A3 to A5. So for the 57 it's A5. 56 not so sure.

Assuming the AV series lives up to its accuracy that it brags about.

Re: Shoot out w/Eric Johnson: New Fender American Vintage 56 Strat vs. Old 57 Strat

I'm not looking to buy a guitar but there's one for sale that I saw online and I asked the music store where it's at about the pickups. He said alnico 3.

Wouldn't matter since the vintage purist will find something to b1tch and moan about on it anyway. I heard a difference between the two but in a live context it would probably be negligible. Can't really say which one I liked better.

A5 all the way.

A3 Strat pickups do exist but they are very rare and only on 54 Strats.

Re: Shoot out w/Eric Johnson: New Fender American Vintage 56 Strat vs. Old 57 Strat

Like I said, I'm not in the market.

But the nicest 50's neck I ever played was on a 1956 Tele. It was V shaped but big. Very full feeling. Not a big D shape like the big neck on my '54 Tele.

The '56 shape is like a very full soft V shape.

So I guess that's why this new '56 guitar caught my eye. I've always been interested in that year.

In the reviews I've read the reviewers all mention the great neck and describe it as being nice and full.

Eric goes for those alnico 3 pickups. I guess they're great for that chimey cascading harmonic thing but generally, I like the throatier tone of alnico 5 - the pickups from 1962 being my favorites.

Re: Shoot out w/Eric Johnson: New Fender American Vintage 56 Strat vs. Old 57 Strat

Fender had a few "standard" neck shapes in the CS. One of them is from a late 56 Strat. The neck is what they call the "10/56" shape and I love it!!!

I had A3s on a Tele and they sounded great on that platform.

On a slightly related note, it seems like Fender's formula is Maple = V, Rosewood = C. I wish there were more C shaped Maple necks of "vintage construction!

I guess if I really want one there a number of options, just not from the Fender production line...

so young. So naive. It wouldnt even be close. maybe on a clip.If you think that '56 reish' guitar sounds anything even remotely close to how sweet and great a real genuine 1957 Strat sounds , then you are a fool.
You might like to believe maybe one day you can spend 5 thousand and get that tone, but , ha, youre dreamin' dude.

Not all of the vintage guitars(strats etc.)sounded sweet though..Some were duds! I've read and talked to alot of people over the years that got rid of pre cbs strats etc..because they just didn't have that something that we look at in vintage.Same can be said about tubes, but thats another conversation..LOL

I think the Nocaster pickups in both of my Teles are A3 and I really like them! Very early series that measured almost 10k.

That would be non-traditional. Most players are pretty conservative about their guitars and want them to mirror vintage models. I do. Except for a 12" fingerboard radius and 6105 frets.

I don't own a Nocaster any longer but it was a superb guitar. Right up there with my '54 Tele that I've owned a long time now - although I did replace the Nocaster pickups with Antiquiys. I like that electric tone better. Not so bright and crisp.

I wonder of the pickups in my '54 Tele are alnico 5 or 3?

Re: Shoot out w/Eric Johnson: New Fender American Vintage 56 Strat vs. Old 57 Strat

Never gelled with any a3 strat pups I have tried. But for Leos masterpiece, a3 all the way AFAIC. Plenty of bite and bark, nice complex mids and ballsy. Maybe with a rw board, I would like A5s more than I do, but I am an all maple neck guy when it comes to broadnotelecasters.

I like them both but play my rosewood board Tele more than my '54 - even though the '54 is a better guitar.

I use my rosewood board, alder Tele with a Jerry Doncahue bridge pickup and Strat neck pickup and with very high action and heavy strings.

It's my main slide guitar.

I just sit around writing songs on it.
