Show me some Jaguars, Jazzmasters, Mustangs

Re: Show me some Jaguars, Jazzmasters, Mustangs

Rewards can be reaped by learning how to set up the Mustang. ;) If you still think not I'll buy it from you :laugh2: Then again late 70s Fenders can be odd in terms of quality (as just about everyone knows), I've seen Broncos (like Mustangs) with neck pocket gaps you could fit a dime in, lol. All the 60s ones I've played have been excellent, and MIJ/CIJs nail the tone IMO...

I like to keep it just because how cool it looks. The only thing i don't like about it are the pickups. I find it hard to believe they are the same pickups as a strat...

Other than that it is well built...

crappy pics. It looks like left handed but it is really just a mirror image...

Re: Show me some Jaguars, Jazzmasters, Mustangs

So say somebody wanted a Jaguar of their own -- probably in sunburst -- since you're the resident expert i figure i'll ask you the best way to go about doing it.

...Well I've spent a lot of time thinking about the easiest/best way to get a Jag...

CIJ/MIJ Jags are a bit expensive now, you can probably find one for about $500 if you're very lucky, but more likely you'll pay closer to $600 or $700... (used on ebay, which really is the only place you can find them. Don't expect any shops anywhere to have them).

But if you think about it, to get it sounding and playing near the quality of a US model, the two things that really should be replaced are the pickups and the pickups and the trem, and compared to a US RI, it lacks a mute. Thinking about it that way, you're likely to spend about $100 or so on pickups, $70 for a US trem, and the value of the mute lies somewhere around $30 bucks, if you really want that...

From that perspective, youd probably be better off waiting for a used AV on ebay for between $900 and $1000...

BUT :D

Furthering the agenda, if you look closely enough, you can find a vintage refin. for about $1200 that may be a bit rough and ready, or just a partsuar, but will work just fine. That's probably the best deal overall...

In the end I'd say that $500 is the best you can get for a CIJ/MIJ (though prices for those are rising because they're less and less available), $900 is the absolute lowest you'll likely find an AV for, and $1200 is the lowest you'll find any playable sort of vintage frankenstein for. I'd consider any of the above "good deals".

I find it hard to believe they are the same pickups as a strat...

Yep, just strat pickups with flat polepieces, they could be wired in some odd way because people always mess with the switches, but yours looks clean so I doubt it... they're really isn't a difference mechanically between Mustang and Strat pickups, they just never seem to be on the hotter end of the spectrum. Yours does look great :D Nice pornstache :smokin:

And Talmans are nice :D

btw more pics, staying on topic...

SCREW YOU DANGLY!!!!! I want ALL of those guitars! Wow, I never knew a sparkle guitar would be so cool. And those Seafoam/Surfs have been on the GAS list for a while. Only thing better would be a maple necked seafoam pic! :D:D

I actually plugged it into my valve jr head beacuse I was bored and was shocked to find I am really digging the sound now. The reason I didn't like it was I had always tried it with my Roland Jazz Chorus 120. I like the way it sounds through a tube amp though!

Nice pornstache :smokin:
I am bringing it back (but did it ever go away? or was it ever there in the first place?:boggled:)

Oh and a quick question: The mustang has a different tremolo bar than a strat right? I need to get one...

haha, glad to have reignited The Interest :D

Anyway, yeah, the Mustang uses an unthreaded bar... a strat bar will work, but look funny (not really to an audience though) and not be the right length (not that that matters either...) Just make sure it's not mashing into the baseplate when you screw it in, whatever type of arm it is... actually I'm sure many people don't even reallize it when it is, and hence complain about the Mustang trem (I'll post pics if you don't know what I'm talking about, lol)

As for mapleneck Jags, they grew on me in a big way, I've never seen one that wasn't sunburst (oddly).

Yeah I noticed that it can't be screwed in. The length is a bit odd but I hardly ever use a trem anyways. Is there a place where you can order remake replacement parts such as the trem online?

Re: Show me some Jaguars, Jazzmasters, Mustangs

...I trust guitarpartsresource.com, who have never done me wrong, but I've known some people who have trouble with them occasionally...

...allparts has em for just as cheap though, lol. http://www.allparts.com/store/bridge-parts-tremelo-arms-bp-0274-001,Product.asp

Mustang trem is probably my favorite Fender trem... can be set up for either floating or divebombing so much it can slack the strings, and still go back in tune. Just make sure the bridge is centered and the nut properly cut... Good setup in general really.

Re: Show me some Jaguars, Jazzmasters, Mustangs

So I'd seriously be spending the same amount of money for a decent Les Paul to get a decent Jaguar?

this could be one of those really defining 'crossroads' moments of my life.

Re: Show me some Jaguars, Jazzmasters, Mustangs

p.s. thank you for posting that pic of the fender xi. the usual porn sites are disappointing me tonite but that deffinitely did the trick.

Re: Show me some Jaguars, Jazzmasters, Mustangs

lol, i only posted the vi because i couldn't find any decent xii pics :D anyway, did you figure on jags being more or less expensive? an mij even without upgrades is a great axe for $600 or so, but the discerning sd forum goer would probably want the better pickups and trem... can you get a studio for around that much these days? (my last The Paul was like $500 but it was a the paul...)

but like i said, for around a grand you can get an av which would require no hardware upgrades, and for a few hundred more the real vintage article. the price spread with jags is def smaller than pauls.

Re: Show me some Jaguars, Jazzmasters, Mustangs

Well SG Standards are going around $800 these days, which is more like what i'd get anyway.

I dunno, in a duel between a sunburst Jag and a black SG...that's rough.

I gotta get money so i can have 'em all hahaha

Re: Show me some Jaguars, Jazzmasters, Mustangs

i really dig how all of those guitars are so different! very cool

Re: Show me some Jaguars, Jazzmasters, Mustangs

yup it's making things kinda tricky for me. one minute i'm like 'jaguars all the way', the next i'm feeling mustangs a bit more. Dangly might have put me off jags there a bit with his extremely valuable but dissapointing assesment of Jaguar prices at the moment.

Dangly, wondering if you could tell me what stock Jazzmaster pickups are like? they look like they might sound like P90s but i understand they have rod magnets rather than a bar.

Re: Show me some Jaguars, Jazzmasters, Mustangs

I have a really nice pro tools studio at my house. I plan on recording some mustang clips for you guys to get an idea of what it sounds like...

Re: Show me some Jaguars, Jazzmasters, Mustangs

Ohmanohmanohmanohmanohman...can't hold it! Think of baseball...dead kittens...nuns....Roseanne beating a kitten while dressed as a nun.

Love the color! :fap:

(Is that a baritone with a synth pickup? Gimme 5 mins and re-read top part of this post)

Ok, so it's a Music Master, but it's almost the same thing :D

This is the original color of my dad's '72 lefty mustang before getting drunk in the 80's, sanding it down and spray painting it green. :earl:

She's still in the corner of his room rotting away. I need me a cigarette just thinking about it..

P.S. sexiest thread ever guys.. made my day!
