Show me your modded Marshalls

To me the hot-rodded Marshall is the sound of rock. It got into my blood at an early age, and, whatever qualities other tones may have, I suspect that nothing will ever quite compare to it. A Marshall 1959, a smaller JCM 800 etc. are really cool boxes stock, but they are also such great platforms for going into high octane territory.

Or, at least it was, until used prices and practical alternatives made them less appealing. (I can only assume that loudness was always a problem.) For myself I have never owned one, and probably never will, as I live too far away from any capable modders, and besides there are different options these days. There are also many alternatives today, most slightly pedestrian in comparison but definitely workable. My ADA has a hot rod voice of its own, and amps like Splawn and Soldano provide their own takes on the hot rod.

Still, a modded Marshall is an awesome thing in itself. Each of those amps has a story of its own to tell, and a sound of their own. Who still owns one of these beasts? Where has your been? What has been done with it? How does it sound compared to stock?

Re: Show me your modded Marshalls

Not an old Marshall by any means, but it's modded. '07 JVM 410H. Heater fuse delete, mid sweep mod on clean, OD1 & OD2, 3rd gain stage bias control, negative feedback control, plexi cap mod, OD2 Rectifier mod, OD1 JCM800 2203 mod, Blackface Clean mod, Crunch channel 1959 mod. I may be forgetting one or two. Did all the mods myself. I still want to tweak OD1 because it has too much of a low mid half cocked wah thing going on for me tastes, but other than that, I'm happy with it. It was a versatile amp to begin with, but after the mods, it's even more versatile. I can go from classic Marshall stuff to sparkly Fender like cleans to more modern tones. It's great!

1982 JCM800 2204. Snipped out the treble peak, and replaced a resistor and added a bypass cap for a boost in gain. Still sounds like an 800, just doesn't need an overdrive to boost it.

What's the heater fuse delete do for you, exactly?

Early JVMs, such as mine, had heater fuses. But they had quite a few go out that had something wrong with the fuse holders. I don't know if it was a metallurgy issue that effected conductivity, or what, but enough went out that Marshall issued a service bulletin giving authorized techs their blessing to remove them. So, I went ahead and removed them and installed jumpers simply to nip a potential problem in the bud. Did it do anything to the tone? It's questionable.

That's what I was wondering. Heaters, as long as they're not being starved, shouldn't affect tone. But if they were popping due to abnormal reasons then good call on the mod.
