To me the hot-rodded Marshall is the sound of rock. It got into my blood at an early age, and, whatever qualities other tones may have, I suspect that nothing will ever quite compare to it. A Marshall 1959, a smaller JCM 800 etc. are really cool boxes stock, but they are also such great platforms for going into high octane territory.
Or, at least it was, until used prices and practical alternatives made them less appealing. (I can only assume that loudness was always a problem.) For myself I have never owned one, and probably never will, as I live too far away from any capable modders, and besides there are different options these days. There are also many alternatives today, most slightly pedestrian in comparison but definitely workable. My ADA has a hot rod voice of its own, and amps like Splawn and Soldano provide their own takes on the hot rod.
Still, a modded Marshall is an awesome thing in itself. Each of those amps has a story of its own to tell, and a sound of their own. Who still owns one of these beasts? Where has your been? What has been done with it? How does it sound compared to stock?
