Show us all your basses then...

Re: Show us all your basses then...

Yeah the jackson pickups/preamp are bad sounding, If you swap to active pickups you will probably have to change the preamp. I would swap in some EMG 45P/Js and a BQS preamp.

Be sure to measure your current pickups before ordering replacements. EMG-45s are designed for six string and are 4 1/2" wide. A five string will typically use EMG-40s which are 4" wide. I'll second the P/J set as it's my favorite basic EMG sound, but I'm also fond of a TW in the bridge and JCS in the neck. That setup sounds like a MM/J with the TW at full output and like a dual-J with it set to 'single-coil' mode.

Re: Show us all your basses then...

I added a thumb rest provided by the guys at traveler, I think they dicontinued this model, I bought it to go with me to Iraq in 2005-2006

How does it play plugged in? One of the bands I work with includes young children and our bass player struggles to keep his bass up because of the weight. He plays a Fender now and if your Travelor really works it would be a decent substitute until the kid grows a little. :-)

Re: Show us all your basses then...

RIP my LP Triumph... *sigh*

I used to brag on the fact I had one, then I didn't anymore. Lesson learned.

Things (like cool basses) come and go. Invest in your chops, sharpen your skills, open your mind and heart to artistic expression.

Learn the song, play the song, do the song justice.
Great advice. What do you play now sir?
My guitar tech is one of the greatest guitar players I've jammed with, and one day he was over and picked up a 90 dollar (or so) electric guitar belonging to one of my students. He let it ripped and I doubt most people listening could tell he was playing a young person's starter guitar. He turned to me and said, "hey this is a neat little guitar" and he was shocked when I told him it was a guitar selling for under 100. Your advice is good stuff. Hard to follow.....but right on and worth sharing.

How does your '62 play? Wondering how the vintage basses hold up these days with some of the hotter pups and even the active pickups? '62 was a great year for strats, at least the Fender re-issues. I have a few and they are sweet.

I never had the original pickup for the Fullerton baby. Mine carries an early Antiquity.

The neck is full width precision but very flat. The whole bass sounds very warm, nice pairing with the bright Antiquity. No doubt helped by by the floppy neck. The whole thing is more like a bow. There is no question in my mind that the Fullerton AVRI use wood that was selected differently from the rest of the early 80s Fender. I don't perceive it as that superior, just very different.

I didn't have an opportunity to dial it in by finding the rights strings for it. It currently has Chromes flats but I think the answer lies elsewhere.
