I am so going to add a drink holder to an amp one day... That'd be awesome...

That would be the greatest thing invented since the cigs in the neck .....
hm... Some day I will make 4X12 cab made out of oak barrels from Jack Daniels.
Sorry for the hijack

Re: Simple Amp, opinions wanted

Like Lew said on page one, there should be a drive switch somewhere. Even if most people end up not using it, and stack a Twin Tube, TS, or boutique drive in front, having the ability to kick on overdrive is pretty important IMO. As a standalone amp it should have two grit levels available with a footswitch. The Crate vintage clubs were kind of like that. They had these great clean sounds, and then the OD channel (which was still good btw) went all the way up to grunge saturation if you needed it. You wouldn't buy the amp for it's "metal distortion tone" but it was nice to know it was in there in some form. So even if it's like a built in "Burn Unit" style S.S. circuit that can be kicked on, it would be valuable IMO.

This thread also turned up another idea. Perhaps it's what you're going for already, but how about a tube "amp" that's extremely transparent, designed to be the "empty shell" for a guy with a full pedalboard/fx boxes? Instead of trying to impart the holy grail tube clean tone, you'd go after an open, dynamic, non overdriving sound, that could handle all the front end units, and perhaps TWO fx loops with level control, and a whole bunch of footswitching options, like solo boost, fx bypass, tone stack bypass (like a "flat" switch) and perhaps bright and deep on the footswitch as well. It would be the epicenter of a good rig, like a swiss army knife without the blade. You'd supply your own blade. Kind of like the Randall idea with the modular preamps, but designed to work with anything, not proprietary preamp modules. And it would make a fantastic "stereo-izer" slave for any tube head, too.

I'm thinking of a simple 5 knob amp, vol, treb, mid, bass and reverb. Deep switch and bright switch. Hi/Lo inputs Classic american surf tone.

Is there a market for it? :usa1:

Sounds like there is considering how many Fender amps are out there. I would buy one if it was priced right!

Re: Simple Amp, opinions wanted

So Scott, how about sending Lew, Curly and myself each a prototype since we hopped on board with the original plan without asking for modifications?

BTW - What is the expected wattage out of this?

Re: Simple Amp, opinions wanted

How about something Matamp/Electric with reverb style - Gain/Fuzz, Bass, Mid, Treble, Reverb, Master Volume?

Re: Simple Amp, opinions wanted

Sure, make one. No matter what a small custom amp company comes up with, there will be a person with cash, ready to scoop it up. I think you should just have fun making any type of amp you feel like, then put a price tag on it. That should be your niche. No custom orders, just custom amps that have a price on them.

Depends on whether you run the 6V6 or the 6L6 tubes. :)

20 (6V6) or 40 (6L6) watts approximately, less if you decide to run 5881's. The amp will be set up for big bottle 6L6's.

And, Joe, I'm there man. I'm about to through with my waiting list. I'm about to start making what I want to make. But, yes sir, I'm very much there. I still have promised Hoss we'd build him something custom. We'll see how it goes from there.

so far the best idea was the original one :)
+1 A 5 knob 40 watt, 1x12 combo is all I really need.:) That's why I bought a HRD. I totally disregard the drive channel and FX loop. Beside the sweet sounding cleans and verb. The 4 ohm tap on the O.T. was a big selling point for me. A P2P wired HRD without the bells and whistles would be ideal for me.

Re: Simple Amp, opinions wanted

Scott,
I think you're right to go with 5881s .. since it's the same amount of work to build, I think the higher power would appeal to more folks, and be totally gig worthy.

Add single knob BF reverb, a beefier OT, and a slightly larger pine cab and you have a nice compact giggable amp at a reasonable cost. If you added a tone stack defeat or a adjustable NFB pot on the back panel, you have the overdrive option covered...
some good ideas there .. and I think an NFB switch is something Scott has already done. That would give the amp a little power and tone flexibility too.

one amp that was a little similar was the VHT Pitbull, which sounded great, and IMO should have gone over better, but for some reason didn't.

I think it might've been Roy Nichols who had an ash tray installed on his pedal steel...

HHMMMMMMM......snip off the part that attaches it to the mic stand & attach it to the amp :13: :beerchug:

Re: Simple Amp, opinions wanted

Hey Scott, the other day when I asked you about building an 18 watt TMB Marshall clone head, what I meant was have you considered adding one to your product line.

Of all the amps out there something like that is what I'm considering as a possible future purchase.

I'll build it as soon as someone makes me. Not that I don't want to, but I'm just going to wait until someone commissions me to do it. It's a very straightforward build.

Ever since I built that Evan-Rude for Evan, I just got hooked on the blackface thing with that dumble deep switch thing. It's a tone bouncing around in my head still.

Re: Simple Amp, opinions wanted

I'm still waiting for a Two Rock clone, 2 channels with switchable bias for 6L6 or EL34's.

Re: Simple Amp, opinions wanted

Jeff, unfortunately, you're going to be waiting a while man. Sorry.

Re: Simple Amp, opinions wanted

Me thinks less is more...sometimes. Versatility is a bonus, but if you can squeeze tone out of a few knobs, I think it would be much more novel...FWIW
