Re: Slide Guitar
Most slide players play in open tunings as well. If you are experimenting and want to take it to a new level tery usin open G and open D Here are the tunings
OPEN D: (6) D (5) A (4) D (3) F# (2) A (1) D
OPEN G: (6) D (5) G (4) D (3) G (2) B (1) D
These are the 2 most common tunings used by the great slide players listed above. There are exceptions...... Warren Haynes plays in standard tuning and so did Duane Allman, but they also use these tuning in certain situations. Eric Clapton uses open G a lot when he plays slide.
Practice playing with your fingers instead of a pick. The fingers of the right hand are invaluable as a tool to mute unwanted strings. You will also need to experiment with which finger to wear the slide on. Some people like the pinky, while others prefer the ring or middle. Remember there is no right way.... if it sounds good that is all that matters.
Experiment with raising the action on your guitar. The higher the action the easier it will be to play slide clean. If you have a guitar with a tunomatic type of bridge it would be the easiest to play slide with. Then you can experiment with slide materials. Metal is what you have now, try glass, and then maybe brass or porclean. They all sound a little different and can feel very different on the strings as well. Good Luck and Have fun.
Oh............ Check this guy out too. He plays in Dropped D
