slide players...

Are you addicted to slides in general?! I bought a new slide and it got me wondering how many slides I actually own so I started gathering them up in one place for a head count...

I guess I'm stock piling because I've lost and/or broken so many over the past few years I don't want to run out on day but I'm starting to wonder when I'll stop!

Re: slide players...

LOL.. nice collection!
I've only got like 2 glass slides laying around that I haven't dropped and broken yet..

I switched to the brass Dunlop (#242 I think) a year ago because it doesn't break when I toss it, and I REALLY like the musical tone, especially with low gain/OD

the chrome slides are too brash sounding to my ear, I may experiment with porcelain as it's a bit more durable than glass

Re: slide players...

I think I have five slides... A chrome dunlop that I don't like, a homemade brass one made from a chunk of smoothed water pipe, a porcelain one, and two glass (light & heavy). My favorites are the brass and heavy glass since they work well with a wide variety of tones. The chrome one is bright to the point of being just about useless, while the porcelain one is so smooth sounding that it only really works for clean.

Re: slide players...

Nice collection!

I wouldn't say I'm addicted and even less that I'm on a good level but it's always fun. I have only 3 of them. A glass one, a rather oversized metal tube that was cut out of some furniture ages ago and a Hoolahan slide that I tend to use most of the time and I guess I don't use it as intended. I use the mid finger for that stuff and I like a tight fit and this type seems to lock on my finger the less. I stopped using solid tubes onstage when my finger stuck in during a gig and I was unable to rescue it for minutes and after making it free my mid finger did not work too well.

I've got two right now. A Dunlop metal slide and a glass bottle slide. I love the tone from the glass. What I really miss is the Joe Perry slide I had. It was in a bag of gear that got stolen from my garage. Just haven't replaced it yet.

I'm not much of a slide player but I'm working on it.

Re: slide players...

I use three slides (all very poorly, I might add... ;))

Dunlop Glass
Dunlop Keb Mo Ceramic
Bigheart Robert Johnson Red Bronze

The bronze one sounds awesome on acoustic, so swampy on D tunings!

I can totally see how a slide player would acquire quite a collection...

Re: slide players...

I have some commercial ones, but my faves are ones I made from bottle necks found at old mining ghost towns out here in AZ. I kinda stick to glass (like Earl Hooker) unless it's Elmore James or a Muddy kind of thing.

Re: slide players...

I've had the same silver colored slide since about 1994, and about eight years ago, I inherited another just like it when my dad died. At times, I have used a deep socket (3/4", I think), which is good if you like a heavy slide.

Re: slide players...

Nice pile of slideage!

What's the new one?

Thanks watt! The front 2 are new, picked 'em up at the same time.

I have really come to prefer double cut wine bottle necks and gave several.

The 2 new ones come from Willys Slides Michigan. He sells on eBay and thru his Facebook page. They are very well made and he's great to work with.

Re: slide players...

I have bunches of em but I basically only use one 90% of the time. a red glass bottle from the real bottlenecking company. it fits my finger great and I haven't broken it yet lol

I hear ya!

I used to have a dark green bottle neck that I loved but at a gig one night I dropped it and when it hit my Fuzz Face it just shattered!

I have gotten myself another fav bottle neck but as with anything of this nature it's only a matter of time...

I recently picked up a vintage medicine bottle...real glass, very similar to a Coricidin bottle...almost the same in fact but it's so thin I'm afraid to take it out of the house!

Re: slide players...

I own 5 right now, only because one mysteriously disappeared from my collection about 9 months ago.

I have an Eric Sardinas sig, a Mudslide, silver Dunlop 220, plexi Dunlop 215, and a copper Dunlop 222.

Re: slide players...

When I first started palying slide, I had try to learn how to make them. The one of the far right is super straight and very thick; too thick and too heavy, unfortunately. I have settled in with Dunlop 210s. When they break, I just order more of 'em!
