Hmm I've decided I am just gonna stay away from the pre 80-82 Marshalls, I am seriously considering Edana in the near future as I bet the build quality is way better than JTM45 re-issue. I was wondering if there is a Splawn of Soldanos of sorts ...

Edana is a bit off in left field compared to a SLO.
Well Jeff can build the circuit in any head or combo, I was just using mine as an example. Mine is essentially a hot rodded 2204. A SLO is a 1959 or 2203 that's hotrodded but for some reason (unbeknownst to me) uses 6l6s and utilizes one more 12AX7 (if memory serves). One thing worth pointing out on an SLO is that the Master Volumes on them aren't incredibly effective, so until you have the amp cooking you still don't get "the tone".
In any case you owe it to yourself to call him up. One of the few guys that can tailor a circuit just for you.
In any case I'm not hating on Soldanos, but for the money I'm not overly crazy about his construction methods, or his component choices.

Nope, I dont hear any Soldano in 5150. The reason i am starting this thread is to find out if there less then $3700 way to get that Wicked Sensation rich, dry, really grainy high gain. I love the Laney tone and I am gonna get a few more but I want that typa gain as well ...

If you want the SLO sound for less money, seek out a used Soldano Avenger head. To me, the Soldano Hot Rods sound a bit too bright and crunchy, but the Avenger is basically the SLO's gain channel.....and I think it even sounds a tad fatter.
Don't look for $500 versions of high end amps....they always fall short. It's better to score a used $1600 amp for $1000. More money, but at least you'll be satisfied.

I mean don't get me wrong it's still it's own circuit, but it's the outgrowth of a 1959--->2210---->Soldano. IMHO Bogner's design is much more groundbreaking than Soldano's. I'm looking at the schematics trying to find the depth knob right now, but I'm sure Jeff could do it for you. After watching him work on my twin and fix it in a matter of minutes I came to the realization he's scary smart.
Yeah, Jeff is the speakersurgeon. Jeff's worked on Wrecks, D*mbles plexis etc, etc, etc. He uses carbon comp, metal film, and metal oxide resistors in his circuits so as to get the warmth, precision, and performance.

They've got that "buzzy" thing happening, got the gain... midrange texture is similar if not a good bit more 2-dimensional... not smaller, but maybe.

My amp is a 2204 not a DSL. So I can illustrate what all mine will do with just twisting the guitar's volume knob.

The red nailpolish denotes high voltage so I won't electrocute myself rooting around.

Instead of some guy butchering up a perfectly fine amplifier and the risk that won't like it one bit, you'd better leave that amp stock for those who appreciate it the way it is. That way, you won't get stuck with an amp with an amp with a resale value that's a mere fraction of what you paid for it.
The most SLO sound that doesn't come from a real SLO would come from a straight SLO clone, right ?
The Heather is a project for the more experienced and advanced builder. If you can't do it yourself, fill out this form:

I wouldn't call it butchering. The board is perfectly intact and the amp can be put back to stock in less than an hour. Jeff can put it in a mojotone head if you want to I guess. I wanted the circuit in my Marshall head so I had him pull the board and put in a new one.

Not very much is seperating a 5150 from a SLO...
Do not like the SLO much myself...a buzzy fitzy too much brightcap whitenoise overgained piece of...well.....not very nice in the long run!
