ive heard that if you want good tone for cheap the best route is to go small tube amp with a pedal running thru it, is this correct? becuase im really dreading the solid state stuff, so heres what i thought i might do

that epiphone junior stack thing/ or the blackheart combo.

Rocktron Rectifier Distortion Pedal. other pedal to wah wah etc.

is this good udea or should i still get a vox or randall solid state

I would be more inclined to go with an overdrive pedal versus a distortion.

I gigged for quite awhile with a Blues Junior and a handfull of different overdrive pedals. For at least half of the gigs I just brought one particular Tube Screamer along and it served me fine.

i play death metal. so that pretty much rules it out.

Sure.

Then I would suggest going with a digital amp if you can't afford one of the real deals...

.....didn't we already have this conversation?

Re: small tube combo + distortion pedal = good?

VJ's and other little class A EL84 amps are awesome sounding amps and awesome values but they are not death metal amps, pedal or not. They will give excellent traditional amps tones with some great breakup and saturation but in a classic rock/blues style but thats not what your after.

As I've mentioned before, for the tones your after, a Line6 Spyder with the Insane channel will deliver it, and it will deliver it cheaply.

I know you seem to be against digital amps, and lord knows I don't like them, but for the style you want, and more importantly the budget you want to stick with they are the choice.

Theres honestly a reason why GC is full of kids blasting away on those things all weekend long. It does have the the tones they like.

As a getting older (wiser ?) man, I can only hope that in time they will all start to appreciate some "real" music and buy a "real" amp LOL, but in the meantime the L6 stuff keeps them quite happy. I used to sell a TON of those things when they came out at the store I worked at.

Re: small tube combo + distortion pedal = good?

I'd go for a small Fender tube amp or a HRD with some pedals in front.

Otherwise, try a hybrid amp like the Vox.

The new Line 6/Bogner tube amp also seems like a good choice for the metal player...

im very anti spyder III, i might consider flextones or Vetta II's but no spider.

Re: small tube combo + distortion pedal = good?

eh, think ill get the vox, thats what everyones said on all forums, and i did love the amp models, im still gettin the zombie rectifier pedal though

Re: small tube combo + distortion pedal = good?

The Flextone amps have a rectum-fryer model that is tight and punchy. Their Insane model takes that premis a step further, it's so distorted and grindy.

Why are you anti spider ?

Have you played one ? Between the Spinal Puppet and Insane channels they are the exact tone your after in that CC clip.

I think they sound horrible of course, but I also think Cannible Corpse's tone is horrible so you can see how they are actually a very good fit :beerchug:

You do realize that a modeling amp is not going to take well to a dirt pedal in front right ?

The Vox ToneLab's are nice as they have a modeling option of adding a pedal to the front end, as do the POD's but its done in the algorhythms.

Unlike a tube amp, you can't hit a digital device harder and push it into more saturation. All you do is produce digital clipping which is quite unmusical (even for death metal lol)

Re: small tube combo + distortion pedal = good?

The new Spider sounds a lot better than the II. I have one. The Insane channel is freaking sweet. It will rock your metal needs. The III has a lot of improvements specific to the Insane Channel. Great amp for the money. I have the 200 dollar one and its loud enough to keep up with a drummer in a small gig setting (bar, coffee shop). IMO the Spider's mesa model sounds a LOT better than the Valvetronix's. I had one of those for a bit. The Valvetronix more aimed towards modern tones may be good. But the Bogner hybrid Line 6 amps look amazing.
