SNAP! ARGHHHhhhhhhhh!!!!!

Re: SNAP! ARGHHHhhhhhhhh!!!!!

Nice work.

Also, good thing you had Klusons on that neck so it didn't matter how good your neckbreak repair was -as it was never going to be the ugliest thing about that neck.... :lmao:

sorry,.. Kluson jokes.... I got em.

Re: SNAP! ARGHHHhhhhhhhh!!!!!

All's well that ends well. Looks good.
Thanks for sharing this with us.
BTW, that was a pretty quick repair. I guess that's the frosting on the top.

Re: SNAP! ARGHHHhhhhhhhh!!!!!

Not to open up old wounds (and real glad the OP got the guitar back all nice an sorted) (I know I'd have cried like a baby if it was one of my guitars)...

I found this last night while browsing a particular site (why Gibson headstocks are prone to breaking):

https://hazeguitars.com/blog/why-do-gibson-headstocks-break

I'm no expert in the field and have never owned a Gibson or similar so cannot really pass comment. But the explanation makes sense??? Based on some of the other info. on the site the chap seems to know what he's talking about (but it is of course the Internet so buyer beware of course).

If nothing else he talks about adding a thing called a "Volute" to strengthen???

Re: SNAP! ARGHHHhhhhhhhh!!!!!

OK, I've had enough of the Gibson bashing..... Gibson has made FRICKING MILLIONS of guitars with necks that NEVER BROKE at the peghead, so just STFU.... OK? Enough.

Would you say that Fender has made more FRICKING guitars than Gibson that haven't broke?

Chill Dude.

Nobody is "Gibson bashing" at all. Just thought I'd post something I found that COULD explain WHY Gibson headstocks CAN and obviously DO SOMETIMES break is all (and although I'm no expert on the subject I would imagine it's not limited to just Gibsons i.e. probably anything that has a one piece neck cut the same way).

Just tryin' to understand and maybe help is all.

Good lord... we are speaking about science and fact -not bashing

-because Gibson adheres to the longstanding luthier craftmanship of an angles headstock for tension on the nut -they are prone to breakage unlike so many other brands. Fender's attempt at making a much cheaper guitar actually mitigates this problem entirely -but not intentionally.

Gibson's traditional construction technique (angled headstock, through neck, bridge pins) make it a more expensive YET delicate guitar. That has always been the case.

It's just a fact -nothing to get upset about.

Re: SNAP! ARGHHHhhhhhhhh!!!!!

That was actually a pretty good article.

The ting about the volute, though, is that when a neck breaks, it breaks right on the peg head. That is actually a much harder/less stable repair than a break that sheers into the neck.

Also - remember - the Volute is a 70's Norlin feature. Those guitars have three piece maple necks. They rarely break period.

And I agree - the Gibson neck break is over-emphasized. It is also overly painful when it does happen because of the over-pricing of the instrument.

Re: SNAP! ARGHHHhhhhhhhh!!!!!

That I have only broken 3 in my life is a testament to how tough they can actually be.

2 of them were really hard shots, one was a freak accident.

Funny it seems the repair added a bit of crispness back to the sound of the guitar. It had mellowed quite a bit over time.

Check out Martin and Dean headstocks. There's a volute on those. It's a great solution. But, as he mentioned in the article, the purists will cry about it and have an internet hissy fit because they made a change. Same thing happened last time they put a volute on, but the internet did not exist yet.

I don't have a problem with their necks. Is the article right? From a woodworking standpoint, yes. As ICTGoober metioned, they've made millions that have never broke. Doesn't that they shouldn't change things. Leave reissues with one piece necks and put two piece or a volute on new models. Makes sense to me.

Re: SNAP! ARGHHHhhhhhhhh!!!!!

I am not unhappy about it

Might just be a different brands of strings?

Re: SNAP! ARGHHHhhhhhhhh!!!!!

I broke the headstock on my Gibson SG Special many years ago and had it fixed. The luthier used fibre glass to reinforce the neck much stronger. I must say that my Gibson sounds real good if not better. The total repair for mine was $200 which was worth it. How much $ did you're repair cost?

;>)/

I didn't think you would be. I was being silly. :)

Could be the strings. Makes sense, especially if it had been a while since the last change.

$100 is a good deal to do it that good.

Re: SNAP! ARGHHHhhhhhhhh!!!!!

Hey Wattage.

Going slightly off topic but I just watched some of your stuff on ReverbNation. Fantastic stuff man. You dudes are really great live. Must go down very well with audiences. That’s what it’s all about really i.e. entertainment (this as opposed to the self serving route in which I’m headed for better or for worse!!! LOL!!!). Which one/who are you in the band??? Love the videos (especially “Devil Devine”) (and the look on the cat’s face in that video is priceless) (and a very clever video). Couldn’t help but notice though: that blue guitar also appears to have had a break not???
