Snarly Les Paul

Re: Snarly Les Paul

how about an A4 59 in the bridge?

How is the neck tone? Do you need to dehonk that as well? I actually like the cocked wah tone on the neck. A PGn would probably be great.
The neck tone is great. I really dig it, and it's not as midrangey as the bridge pu.

Re: Snarly Les Paul

I have replaced the nut with a tusq xl, and while helping with tuning stability, it definitely enhanced the mids a bit.

I think I'm definitely going to be on the lookout for a darker sounding les paul.

Using the EQ, and preamps in the pod is a decent mask for it for now.

Re: Snarly Les Paul

Have you considered the EMG EXG tone control? It's basically a variable mid scooper with low and high end boosts.

The thought never crossed my mind lol. I'll check it out

Re: Snarly Les Paul

Custom 5 or if you're willing to do DiMarzio, a Steve's Special would tame the mids/wah easily.

Re: Snarly Les Paul

I have a les paul studio that has an over abundance of high mids. Has that cocked wah tone no matter the pickup that's in it. I've lived with it just fine until now. Ive joined a band that do alot of different covers, and I find myself in need of a smoother, well rounded sound, and the emg 57/66 set isn't doing it very well.

I play metal, and the characteristics that the emgs have suit my needs perfectly for that genre. But they dont lend themselves very well to early 90s grunge, or stuff like muse, wolfmother, ect.

I play through a 5150 2x12 combo, and I use a line 6 podhd500x for effects via the 4 cable method.

I think I'm needing something a bit smoother on top with a bigger bottom end?

OK - I'm just gonna say it: Les Paul's ARE snarly. That punchy mid is why we love them!

Re: Snarly Les Paul

I'd spend some time creating new EQ patches, personally. If you really, really want to go passive, the Custom 5 or a PATB-3 in the bridge would tame the mids while keeping some chunk in the bottom.

In the neck, I always, ALWAYS use a PGn in a LP.

Re: Snarly Les Paul

Keep it how it is and get another guitar for your band, something with a different response. You've tried enough pickups already.
Your Les Paul does what it does.

You can't do much more to fight a guitar's natural tendency. My Ibanez has a laser beam in the high mids as well, very crunchy and pokey.
You can't dial that out and I've had from Alnico 2 Pros to Invaders in it. I wouldn't use it to play Led Zeppelin or Thin Lizzy covers.
It doesn't sound sweet or mellow or smooth or "vintage" even with vintage styled pickups.

It does what it does, and so does yours. Don't expect one guitar to do it all.
