Semi New Guitar Day

I had lent a buddy of mine a guitar a couple of years ago and totally forgot about it. Nothing precious - Slick body with an SX neck, GFS pups and trem - decent, played well, weighed a f'n ton

Well he's moving and gave it back to me Saturday, like I said totally forgot about it til I opened the bag to see what it was lol

I remembered it weighing a ton, who knew swamp ash is heavier than lead? So I picked up a Johnson Strat copy for the body, stripped it down, only re-used the pickguard since it is a little different size and got creative making parts fit.

I used the SX neck which is just outstanding, big round C with med jumbo frets and a nice, fat slab rosewood board. I swapped the GFS Gold Foils into the new guard wired to 2 - CTS 250k pots with some kind of cap on the tone. I don't ever really use the trem so it is pulled down tight with vintage style brass saddles and a large brass trem block from GFS. All the GFS parts were on the Slick body.

I had to knock off the peak off the large radius heel fo the SX neck to fit the fairly flat pocket of the Johnson body. I also need to shim it a bit, seems the neck pocket dips down a bit towards the neck piclup but it plays pretty well and I gotta say it sounds really cool, these pickups are all right, kind of gritty in the mids and top end with decent bottom to them.

It's alos got a set of Hipshot tuners which I am so-so on but they work so long as the stay working they have a gig.

Sp now I have a body, neck and a bag of parts leftoverLOL

Swamp ash is super variable as a wood . . . it can be way lighter or way heavier than alder. My swamp ash Jazzmaster body was under 3 lbs.

I've always been interested in those GFS gold foils. Any sound clips?

My mistake it is ash not swamp ash, the swamp stuff is usually fairly light, I always get them backwards
