So I bought a Gibson.

My birthday is coming up on the 30th. My girlfriend was going to get *us* (she'd play it) a Hofner violin bass but this popped up locally for a very low price. It's a used Gibson ES-333. Gibson doesn't make this model anymore, used is the way to go. So far I'm having some trouble adjusting the truss rod, the neck has a lot of relief. At first I was a little worried but I realized I probably just don't have the right tool. I have a screwdriver type handle with a socket tip, both 8mm and 5/16 seem to work, problem is the sockets I have don't go all the way to the base of the acorn nut so it's hard to turn after a certain point.

Besides that (which I'm sure is going to correct itself today when I buy the right tool) everything is stock, NO repairs, no funny business. Gibson pots, pickups, no screws missing. The headstock has some sort of glue that once held this little emblem, I'm working on removing the glue... A very "alive" very loud guitar unplugged, I've yet to plug it into an amp!

Excuse the photos, I don't have a better camera with me at the moment.

Now, steady on! This is a Gibson that we're discussing. :D

Wouldn't the 498T humbucker be too loud for the ego of the lead guitarist in Viacadiz?

Certain characters on this forum would almost certainly be suggesting either the SH-55 Seth Lover or SH-1 '59 with an A4 magnet swap. On this occasion, I happen to agree with them.

I just guessed it was an Epi Dot with genuine Gibson pickups, but your other thread got locked? Nice guitar and it sure is a beauty.:14:

Re: So I bought a Gibson.

Aged Nickel HB covers would finish it off nicely.

I was thinking of putting a Dirty Fingers in it. Remember I play a Vox, not a Soldano, much less gain involved.

this is certainly going to be a lot louder than my Jaguar, which is going to rest for a while.

I closed it so I could mention what it was in the thread title. :)

and yes some covered humbuckers would do it for this guitar.

Re: So I bought a Gibson.

I've been playing it for a while and I'd just like to say that it makes sense that Gibson discontinued this model, it was probably hogging up sales... which is good, they make money anyway, but I much prefer the thinner finish (which does polish up) that's on this guitar to the SUPER HEAVY DUTY finish on most 335s.

Re: So I bought a Gibson.

^ a pickguard? Noooo... that will kill da guitar. Aged nickel hum covers ( as mentioned by FF) will give it more mojo.
Nice guitar btw.

Re: So I bought a Gibson.

I also think aged nickel covers would look pretty righteous on that guitar. I love the aged look. I've aged the chrome covers on my Gibson SG and for some reason the pickups sound better.:scratchch The aged look gives your guitar that vintage Mojo.;) BTW, don't forget those pointy indicator washers for your control knobs so you can dial in the exact volume & tone.:)

Uncovered stock pickups. Possible aftermarket pickup covers to go on. Ideal opportunity for magnet swapping.

A ceramic magnet (or three) in the 498T would pretty much turn it into a DF. An A4 magnet in the 490R will give it a more of an old PAF vibe.

Cool as ...

Re: So I bought a Gibson.

Nice. Keep that guitar and a few Fenders, and you'll have all the good tones covered.

As for the glue residue.... Take off the tuning pegs, and work the residue off with auto rubbing compound, and polish it with regular car wax. Don't rub it into the logo though, or it may remove it.

Do not use nail polish remover, acetone, or any other harsh chemical. It'll melt the finish.

If you can color match the red stain, a light wipe of stain on the worn spot will fix that.

Right on, thanks. I don't mind the worn look, it's got the Willie Nelson vibe.

Aged covers would be cool, I understand SD makes some production humbuckers in this style.

Re: So I bought a Gibson.

Personally I love the 498T. It's very close to a Custom 5 (and nearly the same specs), but a tad darker and ever so slightly less output. Pretty much the only Gibson bridge bucker I like.

Re: So I bought a Gibson.

Good looking piece man. I Love a high output pup in a hollowbody, but maybe for your style the 59 would be better. Whatever you decide to do, that guitar looks like a damn fine addition.
