So many new amps, which one?

Re: So many new amps, which one?

Marshall 2204 head. That is what's for dinner! Just took mine home today. Once I sold the Butcher, the fundage for getting the 2204 was no longer a problem. The new owner of the Butcher is deliriously happy with it and can hardly believe that I decided to let go of it. It wasn't an easy decision. That was one seriously good amp once I got her all fixed up.

No pix of the new addition yet. Girlfriend has the camera in her SUV and it's too late to go mucking about looking for it now. I'll take care of the pix later. She's a little rough around the edges, but $599 for a working 2204 head is not bad at all. The damage she has is cosmetic and can be cleaned/repaired with a little creativity. I am seriously stoked!

Re: So many new amps, which one?

I just money down on a JCM 900 Mark III 50w Master Volume, and I'm totally freakin stoked for it! That'll be my new amp for the year.

Re: So many new amps, which one?

I'm a fan of all tones, and prefer British amps from crystal clean through plexi, and Cantrell/Bonamassa type highgain. Creamy and Marshally....not metallic and crunchy. That's why I like Matchless, Bogner, and hotrodded plexi type amps.

I'm about to do an EL34 Matchless style amp. I'll let you know how it turns out. Transformers on the way from CA.

Which transformers did you buy? I can't imagine that Matchless type amps are easy to build. They look like an organized rats nest inside.

Re: So many new amps, which one?

Well I am very interested in the Rivera Venus 6 but the money is just to much for me. I am sure it is worth every penny but that's an awful lot of pennies.

If the small Egg Tweaker is 6V6 then it just went to the front of the class.

Re: So many new amps, which one?

Love it!!!

Spent last night doing some fairly quiet playing and I am thrilled with it. I have yet to dial in something and not like it. So far it is one of those amps that just makes you want to play more.

I am going to wait a few days and do a real nice review of this amp for sure.

I'm trying to figure out who could build me a foot switch for mine when I get it. One that has all three amp models, and the gain boost on it. How cool would that be?

Re: So many new amps, which one?

Is it just me, or do we seem to be in a really good spot for tube amps these days? I mean, just about every price point and wattage is widely available via the internet. Plus there seems to be an arms race in the low-wattage department that's produced some fantastic affordable amps -- all a huge step up from the Epi Jrs. and Blackhearts of a couple years ago. Bedroom players like me rejoice!

My Tweaker has kind of inspired me to change my lineup which I've had for years.

This year, I'm eyeing:

Jet City 22
Bugera V22 :27:
and, on the other end of the wattage spectrum, because I don't have any close neighbors...
Peavey XXX II

That would be great, make it a real gigging amp.

THey are supposed to be making some higher wattage version(s) they'll have to be footswitchable I would think.

If I needed a 100w, I'd probably go this route. Don't care where it's made, if Mike Soldano is involved and I don't have to pay $4000 for it.

Re: So many new amps, which one?

I have the the 20wt Jet City head and I love it. I scored it used at GC for peanuts and used for a gig the next night. I was shocked at how well it held up running flat out.

So now I have used for maybe 3 or 4 gigs and a boatload of rehearsals, nothing but great things to say about it. It does love hot pickups too which is kind of cool. I just put it in the shop to have the tubes checked out and make sure it is biased properly, I miss it.

Re: So many new amps, which one?

The new big-brother Vox NT looks good for something easily reached, and the 2xEL84 Night Train sounded good to me, especially with a good cab. BUT

Really I would love to own a 65 amps Empire, or put together a Ceriatone Chupacabra 50 or 100. Both of those are exceedingly better than any of those you listed in my opinion, and definitely in build quality.
