So Music Man Amps Are Coming Back

Re: So Music Man Amps Are Coming Back

i had a 210 sixty five for a number of years. Killer amp. So killer, my friend and sometimes guitar duo partner kept borrowing it for all his gigs....then recording sessions....then the other people he worked with started asking "where is that musicman?" when he didn't use it. Eventually seeing as i got to use it so little i let him buy it off me....
Funny tho, cos i've even borrowed from him to do some tracking with....the cycle continues.

Anyways - musicmans. Built like tanks. good sounds. Why the hell not?

I'm actually looking at a couple o my ebay watch list right now cos my paypal is full of funds from some recently sold pedals.

I like em a lot.

Re: So Music Man Amps Are Coming Back

Could be cool but with the prices for the old ones still very much in reach I personally see no point plus I have ZERO in giving EB/MM any of my money.

Re: So Music Man Amps Are Coming Back

I've owned two. A 130 watt head and a 65 watt two 10" speaker combo.

The originals, like I had, have a solid state preamp and EL34's for the output.

I was glad to finally get rid of them!

Powerful but flat sounding compared to my all tube blackface Fenders.

^ Johnny Winter used the 4x10 MM amps for a long time. I always considered his sound very 'hi-fi', if not sterile.
OTOH, it'd probably be a great amp for the Pedal Pushers.

Johnny'd sound great playing through damn near anything.

When you marvel at Johnny playing through a Music Man you're marveling at Johnny...not the Music Man.

Re: So Music Man Amps Are Coming Back

Where will they make them?
Good question... Markbass is located in Chieti, Italy. The original MM amps were built in California. A google didn't turn up anything.

BTW, the EB connection with Markbass goes back a long way.

the Markbass website said:
In the late 90s, Marco entered a partnership with Ernie Ball and created a brand called Audiophile. During that period Marco pioneered the use of neodymium speakers for bass enclosures. After a couple of years Marco decided to found his own company, and Markbass was born.

Re: So Music Man Amps Are Coming Back

I don't really hear them as hifi or sterile...I mean, sure not as warm as an old tweed or a plexi but not hifi by any means.

Cool amps in a lot of ways, at least I think so.

I will say that speaker choice has a lot to do with things and a lot of those old MM cabs came with JBL's and most amps sound "hifi" with JBL speakers...

Re: So Music Man Amps Are Coming Back

I thought they were 6l6 power tubes which are pretty linear.

I love the design. Ss frontend is fine.

Re: So Music Man Amps Are Coming Back

Mine both used EL34 tubes. No tubes in the preamp - transistors instead.

I didn't hear them as being Hi-Fi so much as somewhat flat.

Not exactly "lifeless" but not exactly "full of life" either.

Really, they just have the sound of a 1970's transistor based guitar preamp through a EL34 tube power amp.

I had 2 65's a 210 and a 112 both ran 6CA7's and both had the tube PI so they were not fully SS in the front end. The later version was all SS on the front with out the tube PI and IMO they lost some of the warmth of the earlier ones.
The cleans on both were some of the best cleans I have ever heard on anything and make a GREAT platform for pedals. The only clean amp that I would rate better than the tube PI version of the MM 130 was the Zinky designed fender Vibro King!

I would have never expected you to say that...

Well, that's interesting. I didn't know those were mean ol' EL34ish powered. Thanks for the info!

I have no idea what this even means.

Re: So Music Man Amps Are Coming Back

I had an HD-150 for a while, and there was nothing sterile about it. Mine had 6L6 power, it was nice and warm, and the preamp OD wasn't bad at all...nice and crunchy while still very rounded sounding. In fact, it's preamp sounded better than some all tube designs I've played in the last 27 years. Damn thing would shake nails out of the walls at around 6 on the master. I called it the Muscle Man. Sounded KILLER for bass, too. Horses for Courses.

I'm excited to see what they bring back out.

I have a bad feeling about this.

Let's see how it turns out.

They did a redesign later and went to 6L6's in the RD's and other versions + dropped the tube PI and went straight SS on the pre. IMO it was a huge mistake as they lost a lot of that round warm tone the 1st version had when they changed them. The 2 65's I owned from that 1st gen MM era sounded like a really good black face Deluxe but had a LOT more clean headroom and they were just fantastic clean amps.
The last MM I owned was a late 70's 112 65 combo about 5 years back and I should have never sold that amp!!!

I couldnt agree with this any more. Kinda like what Magnatone has done. Old one are expensive, but not as much as the new ones honestly. Plus, the old ones speak to me with the grit, grime and tales they could possibly tell if they could talk.
