So, stripped Les Paul Studio bodies...

Re: So, stripped Les Paul Studio bodies...

See - No they are not in this. At least I don't think so. I'm looking at the prices and looking at the whole guitar cost and I'm not seeing it.

The guitars are so over-priced whole that I fail to see the parted value.

I got a new (NOS) LP Tribute a couple years back for under $600 that I think sold for $900 when current. They are selling Tribute bodies for what, $350 - $400? They'll get close to $100 just for the PCB and control electronics. They aren't selling them to lose money so they must be finding really good deals on whole guitars to make it worth their while. Or, maybe they have a back channel to a big retailer and are selling returns that have blemishes or other problems. Or, overstock of older models from a year or two, or three back. Probably getting real good deals on 2015's ...

Get three or four Gibsons used
Take the photos of the stripped down axes and hardware
Buy some nearly identical Chinese fakes
Ship the stripped Fake bodies and list the originals again

Re: So, stripped Les Paul Studio bodies...

Parts are worth more than the whole. It is the same in classic cars. Take a look on eBay motors. You buy a car for X amount, you strip off every part that can be removed, sell those parts for a total of X+Y, then junk or sell the shell. Profit to be had because each buyer who wants a particular part will pay a certain amount for it and it just adds up. I have a '51 Chevy with no money invested because I eBayed off the parts of it I did not want and it added up to what I payed for the whole car.

Interesting. Sometimes it's the opposite though. I worked on a 64 Mustang that would've been cheaper to build a new one out of brand new parts than to buy the one I was restoring.

But then again, quite a lot of Henry's parts were interchangeable across a lot of his cars.

DO NOT START THAT ****! People on Squeebay and Treeverb are already ****ing over buyers with that nonsense and hiding behind the policies that allow it to happen. Once the PO delivers and the box is opened, you have "accepted the return" according to Paypal.

Please, mods - DELETE ehdwuld's post and this one. It's happened to me!!!!!

Re: So, stripped Les Paul Studio bodies...

Even the stripped bodies/necks I think are too expensive for what they are. At that point I’d rather go Warmoth or something.

Ignoring me won't stop it from happening Mr head in the sand. Folks need to be aware what is happening

Deleting the post is ignorance

Re: So, stripped Les Paul Studio bodies...

My head is NOT in the sand. This forum doesn't need to give directions on how to commit crimes and **** over your fellow man.

Re: So, stripped Les Paul Studio bodies...

You miss the point entirely
The criminals know what they are doing
It's everyone else who has to be aware of how that works

If you had known that a fake was a possibility when you got "burned"
You may have asked different questions
Or made different decisions

But no
Let's just stick your head back in and pretend that it doesn't exist

Feel free to pm me if you wanna continue the debate

Re: So, stripped Les Paul Studio bodies...

Glad you asked this Ace.. Was wondering the same thing myself...

Re: So, stripped Les Paul Studio bodies...

I bought a Stratosphere Gibson Firebird Zero husk. The price was much lower and it allowed me to put in the pickups, bridge etc. that I wanted. The condition of the guitar was perfect, just like a new guitar should look. I ended up with the CC in the bridge and a Jazz in the neck. I really like it plugged in to a small lil old tube amp with an EL84. I made a custom pickguard that gave it a different look, and put on a heavier more adjustable bridge. So there is a market for this kind of thing.

Sometimes it works out. I discovered that people will buy ANY classic car part, even bolts and brackets, if you list it well.

I think the stratosphere-type sellers make their money by asking top dollar for every single piece of hardware, and since eBay no longer charges a fee to list (and relist, and relist...) items they can just keep trolling for buyers willing to pay big bucks for "genuine Gibson" knobs, tuners, bridges, etc. I assume they sell the body/neck for what they paid for the whole guitar and the bits & pieces are pure profit.

Re: So, stripped Les Paul Studio bodies...

eBay has a couple of sellers who part out Gibson Les Pauls of all levels -stratosphere and gibsondependable come to mind. Personally; if the price is right on the neck/body why not build one out with the parts you want?

I would be cautious about the fakes from Asia; however, I've thought about getting one of the parted out LP's since the next LP I get will be getting a set of Pearly Gates along with a nut, bridge and tuner upgrade.

You can build 100 gibsons out of new parts and a shell and still be cheaper than a vintage one......but this is not the example this thread is examining.

Re: So, stripped Les Paul Studio bodies...

It would be nice if there was a place in the uk that sold fretted gibson lp body/neck units.
