So the Uber is a no-go - what now?

Re: So the Uber is a no-go - what now?

Sosom,
I wasnt saying that it was a Splawn, I never try to guess gear on myspace feed too **** compressed. I was just talking about the vibe of the piece.... in my openion this type of riffs need a roaring grawl/very tight defined lows(zero flob factor)/and grainy non mushy gain ..... Now I really understand after explaining this what GearJoneser meant by saying that Laney/Marshall types mix great with Avenger.

.....;)

That track was recorded with a PODxt.

That's an option, but I think I want a good blend of tones, which would probably require more than one preamp to be in the equation.

That's the crux of the issue. I definitely see the appeal of using two high-gain heads for raw power, but I'm really starting to think that something with less gain and a more open character is what I need to compliment the super-tight and powerful tone from the Splawn.

Would it really be that different, though? The Splawn is very Marshally. My impression of the Edana is that it's Marshall-inspired, too. I'm sure it's a great sounding amp, but that to me seems like two scoops of the same flavor ice cream.

Am I wrong?

The Edana concentrates on different frequencies than most marshalls do. It goes up the scale a bit. That's why Angus sounds so different from all the other guitarists out there. He's running the dark channel cranked or possibly bridged using a bright bridge pickup and he's driving it very hard. Probably running the gain on 8 or so depending on his pickup output. The sound is a bit more throaty and focused than any other marshall and would compliment the splawn in a different direction than a 5150 would per se. It's almost voxy, but it has much better bass. The grain of the distortion would be a vast difference from the splawn adding a very focused laser-like quality to the sound that would make it cut like a diamond. You mention wanting something open to compliment the splawn's compressed nature. The Edana is as open as you're gonna get.

OoOoohhhhhhhhh OK. :D Sorry 'bout that, and I see your point. Thanks for the suggestion, man.

That would be cool.

The only thing I've heard that was tighter / more defined than the Splawn was a VHT UL 100. I'm a big, big fan of tight, defined bass.

Where are you at? Find someone local who has a JTM-45 or an Edana and try it out. The edana would be choice, but the JTM-45 reissue will give you a ballpark idea. If you like the combination, give ScottF a call.

Take your amp and guitar into the local GC and start plugging stuff in beside it in the amp room (mine doesn't have a real amp room). You'll get an idea of what works and what doesn't very quickly.

All this talk has made me want to try bi-amping the Edana with my Valvetronix and see what happens. Maybe even tri-amp it with my new 30 watt XL (though the XL might not be heard through all the volume).
