so what was the generalconcensus on the Slash SL5

JeffB

Let it B
I see these are being produced again and available for the past couple of months.I realize price per watt was an issue for some, but tone is my concern.

Not looking for Slash tone at all, but a good low to mid gain Marshall crunch.I would nix the V30 and use a g12m25 either in the combo cab, or use my existing cab.

Anyone here end up with one or put a lot of time on one?

Re: so what was the generalconcensus on the Slash SL5

No, not a lot of time, but I did give one a run through w a tasty Les Paul. I quite liked it. I'm not one to talk about Dollar:Watt ratios as I have 2 amps that are seriously skewed in that regard. :) My philosophy is -- if you like the tone, and you can afford it, then it has value to you. There is no universal scale of 'amps should cost X Dollars based on wattage' to me.

Re: so what was the generalconcensus on the Slash SL5

I actually prefer high volume and high wattage. I love the feel and power, and tone, BUT...

It is not feasible anymore for me unless I got an attentuator. 15 to 20 watts is Ok. But finding much affordable that does not use el84s is tough.

Anyhoo, you know my general tone tastes. Do you think the Slasher would be a decent fit compared to my TM18?

Ps. Will give your clip a listen tonite.

Yeah. Maybe not so much picky, but rather trying to get equipment B to sound like equipment A.

Unrealistic is probably a better description. Or Denial.

I got spoiled with my old 1987, and I have yet to find something that does that on a small scale. Probably never will.

I was underwhelmed and kinda bummed out by it. I had bought a Class 5 a year or two prior to the SL5 coming out and assumed it was just the Class 5 circuit + Slashy gain and a V30.

It's not. The clean channel was too clean and wouldn't even do a "plexi" light crunch when cranked. The gain channel didn't sound as good as my top 6 favorite dirt pedals; Too modern & saturated.

I work at a big music store with a lot of options and the nicest thing I can say about the one SL5 we had in stock was that it really made you appreciate the Orange Amplification company.

Lol. Thanks for the FYI. Some clips seem to be Ok, others not so much.

My Bogner Blue does a fantastic job at what I want, but I do not have a proper platform for it. Doesn't take well to the class5, and the TM18 clean channel is too brilliant.

I thought that I was going to find the clean channel decent and love the gain channel. I actually really liked the clean channel, but didn't like the gain channel as much. I agree that it sounded too modern, and was also a little fizzy to me. I am wondering how much of that is due to the non-broken in v30. I think that a broken in v30 is my favorite speaker, while a non-broken in v30 is my least favorite speaker.

Re: so what was the generalconcensus on the Slash SL5

I've had mine for about 3 weeks now and I really like it. Its definately in my "scope" of Marshall crunch tone - hot rodded 800 - 900 kind of sound. The tone controls are very good and allow a very usable variety to the sound. I've spent maybe 30 seconds on the clean channel - I don't use it. Probably would be fine for pedals and cranked 70's power chord sound. The real guts of this thing is the overdrive channel. Just sounds good - 1/2 gain, 3/4 gain, all the way up.

I have a Soldano Astroverb as well - I'm a small amp guy - and its in the same ballpark. The Soldano definately has a creamier attack and much more midrange gain and is a more modern sound - but they're both in the same area of hard rock amp sounds.

The best two things I've discovered for running the Bogner pedals into is the clean channel of a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe and directly into the poweramp of a Mesa Rectifier. When I get done dicking with my JVM, I'll try my Uber in front of it.

Re: so what was the generalconcensus on the Slash SL5

Opinions on SL5....

Great sounding amp, yet overpriced (regardless of wattage). Miss it in the store I work at, and unlike Empty Pockets, certainly does not make me like Orange any better as I find they have the same problem, good, but overpriced.

Back to the point, certainly missing the FEEL you get from a high wattage amp, in terms of the 'sound', still feels like a good ol tube amp to the fingers. Great cleans, and more distortion than you'll need. No plexi but definitely gets the Marshall crunch with the ability to saturate. Used to be the first amp I'd plug into at the store, sounds good at low volume as well.

Once again, I really liked it, but its just overpriced for what it is. I think Marshall is starting to get this way across the board though...I think $2400 for the 2203 reissue is just ludicrous....and keep in mind I own 2 80's JCM800s and love the ****ing **** out of them.

If you got the money, **** it why not

Re: so what was the generalconcensus on the Slash SL5

^^Are the reissue 2203's on the same level of quality as the 80's ones?

The few I've played were like a very average 80s 2203. They couldn't touch the really great originals, but they were lightyears ahead of the lousy ones. You could probably get it closer to a great 2203 if you knew the right parts to mod. I guess better component consistency pays off for the most part.

Re: so what was the generalconcensus on the Slash SL5

Thanks for all the feedback. I have decided against the Slash. It does not seem to be geared towards the Marshall tone I want.

Re: so what was the generalconcensus on the Slash SL5

Find somebody who wants to unload a class5. 5w plexi tone. I looove mine.

Re: so what was the generalconcensus on the Slash SL5

I have one. A red one :) had it for 4 years.

Too buzzy and boxy compared to the real deal plexis and mf nmvs, but it is in the ballpark. I have thought about getting it modded, but would up spending more than the amp cost me new.

I have come.to the conclusion that I am not going to do much better than what I have without significantly upping my budget and grabbing something like a fastback 22, splawn supersport, avatar 6v6 18w, etc.

Re: so what was the generalconcensus on the Slash SL5

You may want to check out Jim's Marshall clone at Lil Dawg.
The man knows tone, the amps feature stellar build quality, and are quite affordable.

Re: so what was the generalconcensus on the Slash SL5

Tried one in local guitar shop for about an hour thought it was poor just cheap sounding all hype and damn expensive for a slash sticker lol I would buy a jcm 800 50w off eBay and be happy I ditched the sl5.
