Re: So whats the deal with "b stock"?

Also....if you are ordering a b stock guitar through musicians friend or similar, do you get to find out whats wrong with said guitar before you purchase it? and do they take refunds on b stock?

Cheers

Apparently, the differences are purely aesthetic. If you don't mind a few dings/scratches, then apparently they are a good way to save a bit of money.

I say 'apparently', because I have only ever spoken to people for experiences in this.

+1. I've heard some horror stories on those guitars. Some B-stock is pretty decent, a few small dings here or there, but I have heard of cases where there are major stress cracks. I don't believe Musician's Fiend tells you what condition the guitar is before you buy it, I think it's a big gamble (they do allow returns, but the inconvenience of one is still there).

The deal is they are usually a deal. I've never been in a B stock situation where warranty and return did not apply. Check first then go for it!

I bought what may have passed for a "B stock" Mexican strat. My local shop got a shipment in and there were 2 guitars that had dings on the back. The owner sold them at his cost plus cost of shipping because it takes like 4-5 months for Fender to accept the return and credit your account so it makes more sense just to sell it and get your money back quickly. It was a new Fender bought from a Fender dealer, so all warranties applied.

I believe MF's "B Stock" includes factory seconds (read as 2nd) and factory refurbished instruments. The guitars that MF has with scratches, dents, dings, etc. they usually list as "Blemished". MF policy on B Stock is typically full manufacturer warranty and MF Satisfaction Guarantee. I say "typically" as you should always always check for disclaimers on the ad/site for the particular instrument you are considering. The MF price policies/guarantees do not apply to B Stock as they usually start selling them, and will keep dropping the price over time, as needed, until they are gone.

I actually own an Epiphone factory second. The guitar plays and sounds fine to me. Epi doesn't tell you on the tags why it's a second but typically it's a cosmetic/finish flaw and they emphasize playability, warranty, etc. are not affected. For mine it looks like the neck and body were in two different paint runs. It's obvious if you hold it up and look at the guitar from the back; but no one can tell when you're playing it. I saved about US $400 off list and US $150 off what it would go for at a MF, GC, etc.

Approach it with the same caution and reality you would any instrument you'd buy from a catalog, online, etc. If it turns out you like it - you will have saved some extra $$$$!
