I've always loved the look of those old Gibson amps, and wondered why they never had the vintage appeal of Fender Tweeds??? How does it sound compared to Fender?

The only ones I've plugged into weren't maintained and probably had worn tubes.

I'm just piggy backing on all the how long threads in off topic.

Not too long ago. Last month. It wasn't really old, it was a mercury. But it was amazing. I'm probably going to buy it.

If anybody's interested in Gibson amps of the approximate vintage of that MercuryII, let me know. I know a store that has two combos from that era.

actually, a couple of months ago. it was in terrible shape, though, and way too expensive.

Been a few years but last one was an old Skylark, cool amp in a Champ kind of way.

That's a GA-20? My favorite. I have one like it with the original Jensen P12R speaker. It's the Ry Cooder amp I've been told. The secret to getting a killer overdriven tone is to plug into the Microphone input.

I'll let you know how that works out once I get to tear into it. It needs some minor repairs I am led to believe.

i grew up in thousand oaks ca and my neighbor had an amp like this w/ a es335, both in perfect cond. but never played. they all died of alcaholism and the equipment disappeared. played it about 1973.

Re: So when's the last time you played a really old Gibson amp?

The GA20 runs a 5Y3, dual 6V6 and a combination of 6SL7 and 6SJ7 preamp tubes. It's likely to need new tubes all the way around. So, it's sorta like a Tweed Deluxe 5E3, but with pentode preamp tubes instead of triode in V1 and V2. It's supposed to be a rather killer distortion tone box.

Same look dates it to the early 50's. I'm guessing that's lower powered version. Not the same amp as what I have coming. Looks pretty sweet though.
