So who uses or used a MXR Wylde OD ?

all this talk of tube screamers and overdrives has me wondering if I should be content or keep searching

I have a bad monkey and a rocktron nitro booster/enhancer..Im not looking to get SRV sounds thru my clean channel..Im looking to push my lead channel over the top . I am wondering if the MXR wylde OD would be the best for this

the Bad Monkey I use mostly with my valve Jr amp, the rocktron I use more or less always on infront of my Ultra channel on my PV,it gives nice slight compression and sustain.....now if I can just find that screaming boost on top of that

what do ya think?

Re: So who uses or used a MXR Wylde OD ?

i have a wylde overdrive. if you dont have it tweaked right you get alot of noise out of it. other than that the overdrive itself is very cutting. i like it.

Re: So who uses or used a MXR Wylde OD ?

i've tried it on a store. it doesn't get really high gain to me, or it might be the amp i used. i tried it on a Laney VC15, and it sounded pretty bluesy to me. it's muddy at low gain and volume.

Re: So who uses or used a MXR Wylde OD ?

It's an SD-1 sound-a-like, and it sounds great. I have a Japanese Boss SD-1 that sounded every bit as good, so I sold the Zakk Wylde. But if all you have access to is the new Taiwanese SD-1's, the ZW is much better. Or if you're handy with mods, you can start with the SD-1 and try a few mods.

Re: So who uses or used a MXR Wylde OD ?

I've used them and always liked them. I got into the whole, gotta have the upper end stuff for awhile because everyone says it sounds better, and realized I got better tones with the simpler stuff, so I'm on the look out for a new board with just MXR and Boss stuff.

Re: So who uses or used a MXR Wylde OD ?

Wyldes are good. So is the boss SD. So are tubescreamers etc. (including bad monkeys). They are all very similar circuits with some minor differences such as different diodes and symmetric (ibanez style) or asymmetric (boss style clipping).
I think your idea of 3 boosters in a row is not a great idea. Just use one and crank the output. If you can't get a screaming tone that way then perhaps you need to consider a different amp.

Re: So who uses or used a MXR Wylde OD ?

did I say that? no Im not looking to use 3 in a row, I dont use tha bad monkey in this setup, I do use the rocktron, but its not a conventional OD,heck I even use it on the clean channel..its more of a pickup booster ( I know..I know using blackouts/El Diablos and Invaders and a PU booster?)

if you took a poll Im sure you would find quite a few guys using Ods infront of dirt boxes ect.....cascading gain stages ring a bell?

I dont play mud.Its not what you think,,I dont dime my gain even, Im happy with the rhythm tone Im getting...please just let me have 1 more stomp

Re: So who uses or used a MXR Wylde OD ?

I found with the level cranked, I didn't even have to touch the drive level when boosting my DSL head

Re: So who uses or used a MXR Wylde OD ?

I tried one a while back and it did seem very SD-1 based but with a bit more oomph I think.

I happened upon a MXR GT-OD and have been VERY happy with it! Believe it or not, tt has actually BUMPED my Banzai Cold Fusion off my board.

I have an MXR Wylde OD
I selected it from over 200 other ODs/distortions.

I actually bought this along with a Boss Metal Zone.

I wanted a good analog overdrive and a good analog distortion, despite the fact I already owned several digital MFXs.

The MXR Wylde is great in that it adds up nicely to the clean tone of your guitar/rig. Just what you would expect from a good OD.

Re: So who uses or used a MXR Wylde OD ?

The Wylde OD IS a SD-1 clone with more low end and more drive. I had one, wish I still had it too. Nice overdrive. It gets the job done for sure.

Re: So who uses or used a MXR Wylde OD ?

+ lowend and drive :D purrrfect for me...now I just got to decide if I want to get one and build a pedalboard or just buy a Boss Me-70

oh no...hes gunna post another thread!!??

I would look for an older GT series, they are much better than some of the ME series. That aside, I like multi effects for some things, chorus, delay, etc. but for boosting, the od's really are lacking compared to a stand alone tube screamer or whatever you want to use

Re: So who uses or used a MXR Wylde OD ?

I bought one used that had a problem and it sounded absolutely fantastic when it worked. But it was totally unreliable, so I returned it and bought a new one. The new one sounded terrible so it went back. Weird eh?

Where did you find the time to try 200 different pedals?

Also, I'm having a hard time believing that the Metal Zone was the best choice out of 200 other candidates. The Wylde OD, sure, it's a good pedal, but the Metal Zone? Really?

Re: So who uses or used a MXR Wylde OD ?

I haven't tried one, but I'm surprised at all this good press - I was looking at the classifieds at harmony-central and it looked like people were practically giving these away. Every other ad was for a zw overdrive for like $50 or something. I was looking for a blues driver though, so I didn't get it.

That's interesting. Seems like the sound of these may not be consistent from one unit to another, and it's best to try before you buy.
I tried one at a guitar shop and wasn't impressed. It thinned the tone out significantly. It took all the low end out.
It's interesting that others here have posted that it has oomph and low end. The one I tried musta been a lemon. It took out the oomph.
Besides getting opinions from other users, my suggestion, Karmadog, is get down to GC or your local guitar shop, plug one in, and try it against a few other OD pedals. In fact plug a couple of Zack Wylde OD's in and see if they do actually sound different from each other.

weird about the inconsistancies...low batt?
Im sure that bearded biker lookin guy that uses EMGs wouldnt boost his dirt with it if it sounded thin,.....then again I think his treble knob goes to 13 when I like keepin mine around 5

I live no where near anything, I'll look 4 used on tha bay and if I dont like it I'll recycle it

ive been REALLY pleased with my maxon OD808, if you dont know..its the company that made the original tubescreamer chips, just branched off into their own company. i love it :)

Re: So who uses or used a MXR Wylde OD ?

I liked my Wylde... But it broke after under a year of use. The Tube Screamer works much better for me.
