SOAD self-titled album gear

Hello everyone, I have some spare time before I have to study for my last exam tomorrow and I was listening to the first System album and decided I'm fond of the guitar tone. It is aggressive and crunchy without being bright or harsh, and it's relatively clear. It's also very different from the tone on Toxicity and Steal This Album!

Would anyone happen to know what Daron Malakian used on the first album in terms of amps? Was it in fact his Dual Recto/Marshall heads but just dialed in differently?

Re: SOAD self-titled album gear

When I saw them w/ Fear Factory, right around the time "Sugar" was a single, he was using Mesa/Boogie Dual Rectifier's and Ibanez Iceman guitars. Come to think of it, the geeter may have been a one of those Iceman shaped Paul Stanley guitars because the headstock was a little funky looking. However, I believe I saw an article in Guitar Player that stated he did indeed use a Fender Big Apple Strat (there was an accompanying photo of Malakin w/ said Strat and a gear sidebar that mentioned the M/BDR)

Yeah, back in those days their tone was all Mesa Boogie dual rectifier. That being said does anyone else here love the tones and songs of the new album Mesmerize? I think the whole thing's killer start to finish.

YES! Another person who feels the same way I do. I absolutely love the whole album! It may not be classic SOAD, and some people hate it because of that, but it's a really great album.

Oh that reminds me... I just looked on the Fender Site and couldn't find anything about the Big Apple strat... what exactly is it? what controls/pickups does it have? What's it made of?

Re: SOAD self-titled album gear

I don't think they make it anymore, but it was basically a dual hum US Strat. It had a 5-way switch with some interesting pickup combinations, but I can't remember exactly what they were. I also don't remember which pickups it came with. Hopefully someone else knows the details.

Said Iceman also houses stock gibson les paul standard pickups...but I think he mainly used this guitar for Toxicity.
