those used to be pretty popular! hard to find one that isn't all banged up - they must have gone on many a world tour as a stage monitor or rehearsal room practice amp.

What I meant was that everyone tries to copy that Marshall sound and Marshall obviously being Marshall make the MG's sound naturally like a Marshall in some way, so why use another SS amp from another company when they'd just try to copy the Marshall sound in some way. Just go straight to the source I say.

I know it's not the MG series that other companies are aiming for in sound exactly.

I really love that amp. There's one at a place I gig at, and also one in one of the practice studios here at my university. It's such a spectacular sounding amp, although unfortunately the one at the university studio has a broken output jack and now only works half the time (and even then, only if you wiggle the jack for a few minutes and hope you don't move at all during your set).

I use a little ZT lunchbox for most home practice and most gigs or band practices I go to. For gigs it needs to be mic'd up or put through a bigger cabinet though that's rarely an issue, it's damn loud for something that small. It also sounds great, nice and even with good string definition. Sadly, my hollowbody guitar doesn't sound the greatest through it (however my godin is picky.. I've played a Fender FM112 that it sounded absolutely spectacular through, but it's really hit or miss what amps will or wont work).

That being said, my tele and strat sound like butter and bells (warm, smooth, great string defition, clear in any register).

Seems like almost everyone I knew had, or wanted to have one of these..
I remember seeing Iron Maiden on the Powerslave tour.. and saw a couple of these on Dave Murray's side of the stage, (just off-stage.. side fills maybe?).. and I read that Lifeson also used these for recording.

I found a GK 250RL for $100 at a local store.. that's the head only version..
I'm thinkin maybe I shoulda at least checked it out..

Michael Schenker also used a GK. He used it, mixed with his Marshall, to record "Perfect Timing".

I've owned many solid state amps, including Randall, Peavey, a Marshall 3315 150 watt head, B-52, and my favorites- Lab Series. I had an entire collection of them, but sold them all to a friend, who is also a King's X maniac like me. I'm thinking about buying a couple of them back.

Out of what I still have, I love my Pignose.

I have a little Fender 25r that I use for quick practice amp or quick idea in my head amp. great little warm up amp.

Yup. SD-1 in front and EQ in the loop and watch out! Still have mine - it was my first head.

I also really dig my Roland Micro Cube RX. Like a mini 4x12. Whatever power amp/speaker setup Roland uses just kicks ass with the Boss sounds in that thing.

alot of people dig the Roland Jazz chorus. it does have a super clean tone thats hard to beat

Raven RG20, I got it because it was cheap and had a 12" speaker, and it's pretty good.

I don't like mine with a boost in front... seems to mush up the sound and not really make it a fire breather like it does my 800, so when I run it with my 800 I only use my fulldrive with the 800 and the vs100 gets no boost... I will try an eq in the loop, but I don't like loops lol, too much tweaking and no playing haha.

Do you know about the extra presence mod? You only need a couple of things from radio-shack, doesn't require opening the amp and it bypasses the speaker sim when the amp plays normally like an amp.

Another chime in for the Peavey Rage 258. While "only" a solid state, I've not heard another amp like this one. A lot of satisfying tones considering my questionable/unusual guitar - Epi Les Paul w/ Duncan single-coil TwangBanger @ bridge. When I finally get my hands on a Princeton or a Twin Reverb, the Peav will be dropped like Lindsay Lohan from a guest list. Until then, this little box of dynamite will do just fine. I bet I never get rid of it.

Well... they are just things to try. I didn't think that I would like a boost in front of mine either - but then realize you don't need to turn the boost all the way up. A little boost goes a long way with these amps, IIRC. An EQ in the loop, however, will really add some beef to the sound. Might want to give it a try at least ;)
