Re: SOLID STATE AMPS SUCK!...

..NOT! as evidenced by this ; John Fogerty and his vintage Kustom Solid State amps with 2x15's;

I'm drunk on valve saturation! woohoo!!! hehe! i've always loved solid states for lower volumes/practice but with a full band or with a band playing out...gotta be tube for me! Although I hate how they're so damn expensive...and expensive to maintain :gurmpy:

Re: SOLID STATE AMPS SUCK!...

I think the Marshall 8100 did thrashy tones brilliantly.

Re: SOLID STATE AMPS SUCK!...

I like SS for practice and/or low volume work, it's just easier to dial in. Like Dom said, cleanest cleans and highest of high gain sounds are achieved on SS, my cheap little acoustic G20 does them both and does them pretty decently for $40. I haven't played one of those Blackstar HT amps or whatever, but to me it wouldn't be economically viable.

For actual band use though, in most cases, tubes >>>>.

Re: SOLID STATE AMPS SUCK!...

I'll play through any damn amp as long as I can get a sound I like. I don't care if it's made of dried up doo doo crystals, fish guts, and tree limbs.

You hipsters are always using the boutique flashiest stuff on the streets.

Re: SOLID STATE AMPS SUCK!...

I tried a Blackstar 100 watt HT amp at the local shop today, and was surprised at how much I preferred my solid state Blackstar head. Just couldn't dial in the HT to my sound, and the SS is exactly the way I want it.

Re: SOLID STATE AMPS SUCK!...

Does anyone have any experience with Lab Series amps? SS, looks like from the 70s. One (200 watt L11) turned up at our practice space and it looked like it could crush all skulls.

Re: SOLID STATE AMPS SUCK!...

I crack up when I see posts "How do I get ____'s guitar tone"

I think those guitarists should just get a useable sound even if it isn't the best and realize that it's the road to discovering what they like about each sound in hindsight when it's on a record/live soundboard and gradually develop a sound that they can call their own. Some of the forum's favourite sounds I've demonstrated (including Jerry) have had solid state amps in the signal chain, sometimes in tandem with tube amps and sometimes pure.

They had one in the backline of a R&B club I played a lot in the 80's. The thing crushed it. I was only playing cleans through it but it was a sweet sounding amp. The room it self was modest sized and very noisy the amp easily cut through the din.

:bigok: If I were a star with roadies and techs to schlep and setup, It would always be a tube amp. BUT reality is I'm not, and I'm getting older so weight and bulk matters more each day.

I just bought a new ss combo amp and received it yesterday...I now own two; (plus 7 tube amps and 3 2X12 cabs). The new purchase is a Roland Cube 40GX and weighs in @ 20#'s. :) We'll see how this works out. SS does continue to improve, but.....:dunno:

Re: SOLID STATE AMPS SUCK!...

I've never really liked the sound of Orange amps, but their new 35 watt Crush combo sounds pretty good with a Les Paul. Whenever I play through a ss though, I feel like I have to roll back the tone slightly in order to tame the highs if I'm playing on the bridge pickup. Maybe I don't know how to set the amp, but I just find it sounds better that way.

It is funny I love other guys playing through Orange but don't like my tone through them. I don't know if I am not dialing the thing in correctly or if it is a mental block. I wish someone would start an amp Netflix so I could try one for a month.

Re: SOLID STATE AMPS SUCK!...

Re: SOLID STATE AMPS SUCK!...

Just my 2cents. My first amp was a Solid State Fender Mustang III and it modeled a ton of Tube amps and did a great job. The thing that was lacking, is you could not just roll back on guitar volume and clean up the tone. You had to select a clean sound on the amp. I have a 1968 Fender Bandmaster all tube which sounds good clean or dirty with a pedal, roll back the volume and you have nice clean tone. But as stated previously it is what sounds good to the players ears.

Re: SOLID STATE AMPS SUCK!...

If I was a touring musician I would probably choose solid state due to their reliability and low cost. I couldn't imagine subjecting anything vintage or boutique to road conditions.

Re: SOLID STATE AMPS SUCK!...

Re: SOLID STATE AMPS SUCK!...

Making blanket statements about any type of amp - tube, hybrid, or solid state, is really kind of ignorant (true meaning of uninformed, not incorrect meaning of stupid) IMO.

There are good and bad examples of each.

I think the ID series sound MUCH better than the HT series. The high end Blackstars though..series 1? not my thing but they sound great for a modern metal amp.
