Re: SOLID STATE AMPS SUCK!... ;)

I've never gotten anything even remotely decent tone-wise from a Line 6 amp. I've tried mostly the Spiders though which are sort of their barrel-bottom, right?

No experience with their high-end stuff like the HD147 or the Vetta.

Re: SOLID STATE AMPS SUCK!... ;)

about blues and solid state, if you are going to need a nice ss blues amp i can only recomend you to go right now and buy a peavey transtube, set the clean channel on vintage with mids dimed bass and treble on 6 and play with your volume open all the way, be shure of use something at least on the hot paf range, that thing is on edge of breackup with mild picking, ding and you get a nice dirt!

I love how most of the people on here didn't even read the first post, obviously missing the point.

Re: SOLID STATE AMPS SUCK!... ;)

I use a marshal 100 watt mg hcfx but I have a digitech and wah pedal in front of the amp I think it sounds pretty good although I have to agree with the tube guys, id love to be able to afford a 1959 slp 100 watt all tube plexi now I know why jimmy Hendrix went to England to buy three full stacks the rest is history,

Re: SOLID STATE AMPS SUCK!... ;)

Back in my metalhead days I gigged with a Randall RH200 and a Randall Recto sized 4x12 with vintage 30s.
It served it purpose for the old school stoner metal I was playing. I had a Dime CFH and a Washburn Evil Twin down 1 step for that gig..
I was also in a gigging every weekend cover band and we played everything from the doors to whatever was on rock radio at the time and everything between. I used the Randall cab and my Marshall JCM 900 SLX with EL34s for that gig. The Randall was just as loud as my Marshall but the Marshall sounded better for alt rock covers. I play all tube amps now but that's because I can afford expensive things now at 44 and I treat myself to them.

Re: SOLID STATE AMPS SUCK!... ;)

This is my old Randall RG100 into a 4x12 Laney cab loaded with Fane 25's. I was using an LP Custom with A2P's (and maybe my old Jr as well but I can't remember for sure).

SS Glory - loved that amp never should've sold it.

The Vetta's are/were excellent and so is the DT line.

Awful amps, at least in my opinion. Total junk. I once owned a Spider something, don't know which exactly, but it was a horrible amplifier. I found it impossible to get anything remotely good tone wise.

However, lol I love the old discussion of Solid State vs Valve :) Since the dawn of time, people have argued Valve or Tranny. I actually have a Yamaha DG80 which is a solid state amp that was produced in the late 90's and I've had some awesome sounds out of that. I would prefer a valve amp over a solid state, but to say that all solid state's are poor is something that people do all too often.

Not to mention, SS amp technology makes advances (improvements) every year.

Not really... modeling amps are where all the development is at. Outside of the use of mosfets 20 or more years again there is nothing new under the sun with solid state amps either.

Well, the DG80 is an old amp for modern standards and shows some signs of ageing really, but it's the best solid state amp I've ever owned. Hence the fact I still own it. Every other Solid state amp I've had, whether it be the Marshall, the Crate (grim), the Line 6 (grimmer) and the Roland, have all eventually made their way out of the door. This one hasn't and there's a reason for that.

Modeling amps are SS, or hybrid.

Re: SOLID STATE AMPS SUCK!... ;)

Modeling amps are SS, or hybrid.

1 is digital 1 is analog... there is a vast difference between what a modeler does and what a solid state amp does. Maybe they both use transistors for power but thats it. Solid state is not modeling.

I dare you to find me a single non digital modeler...

It's still solid state. The discussion wasn't digital vs analog....you're the one who interjected that distinction.

Re: SOLID STATE AMPS SUCK!... ;)

I think the AMT Legend Series II preamps are non-digital modelers. One clean model, one dirty model in one pedal using JFET's. No processors onboard

The distinction is important when you are claiming great advances in solid state technology which is untrue the advances are in digital solid state has remained the same for years

I dunno dude maybe... They don't advertise them as modelers they advertise them as engl voiced pedals, if that's a modeler then so is the old Marshall bluesbreaker pedal. Seems the amt stuff is more along the lines with what tech 21 did with sansamp

Re: SOLID STATE AMPS SUCK!... ;)

They have models for Marshall, Cornford, Peavey, Krank, Orange, Bogner, Engl, and a few others and advertise cleans as fender or vox, but you just get the one clean, one dirty per pedal. I guess similar to Sansamp, but they clearly are labeled to model specific amps. I have their D2 which models the Diesel. Then they have their tube cake series of power amp pedals and finally the 50 watt Stonehead which I also have. It is not advertised as a modeler other than it models a tube amp which is pretty nondescript. I think with the Stonehead they are trying to stay away from the label of modeling. In my opinion that is a good thing.

They also make solid state tubes. Two types so far. 12ax7 and 6L6GC. Plug into 12ax7 preamp sockets directly or 6L6GC sockets, but are entirely solid state. Modeling the characteristics of those particular tube types. Interesting stuff even if not catching on that great with tube enthusiasts.

The Stonehead definitely has dynamics feel of tube while playing and very responsive to guitar volume changes and pick dynamics. I prefer it over any modeler because it just has regular amp controls, not picking a model on a dial like a line 6 or most other modelers. The tube cake pedals and Legend Series II preamps also share that responsiveness.

I think it is some progress in solid state. Interestingly enough, my D2 preamp sounds best going into fx return on my Peavey ValveKing II 20mh tube amp. JFET pre, tube power is a good combo with these.
