Solid State NAD

Yeah, I see what you mean But I've never tried one mic'd up and the Orange 2x12's I've played through always sounded pretty sweet standing out in front of them. In fact there's this dude I know who plays in another doom band (Stoner kind of stuff) who get's great recorded tones with a Tiny terror through his Orange PPC2x12 which ,if I remember correctly is loaded with Eminence Governor's.

Doesn't sound like a setup I'd like, LOL. I hate Governors and Tiny Terrors too.

I'm not a fan of Doom overall, TBH. The only stuff I can listen for long is Draconinan and some old Katatonia, TBH.

To each their own man. Unlike a lot of guitar players I'm not looking for "tight" ..I like sluggish, fat & organic tones..

Having said that I'm not into the whole hipster/stoner thing with the boutique fuzz pedals. My idea of great doom is Candlemass (with Messiah), Trouble, Solitude Aeturnus.. stuff like that or doom death like Autopsy, early Paradise Lost, Asphyx. Morbid Angel ..none of them bands known for tight tones :lmao:

My fave recorded tone (both rhythm & lead) w/ my band actually came from my Bugera amp (333XL Infinium) with a tiny bit of slapback delay from a cheap delay pedal in the loop & my Bugera 4x12 w/ it's stock speaker mic'd with a single SM 57..

So my tastes are far from typical...I could'nt care less what it is as long as I like what it sounds like inthe end

And here;s the complete final/album version w/ bass & vocals....it just got darker & murkier :laugh2:

But then the path to truly evil sound is always dark & murky imo.. :bigthumb:

Mic'ing a good-sounding cab is not hard if you want it to sound OK. Don't get me wrong, finding the perfect spot is. But you can usually throw an SM57 in front almost any 12" speaker with the small dustcap (ala V30/GB) and 1.75" voice coil in the usual sweet spot and expect to at least sound usable to be a good starting point. If it's not sounding good that way, then the amp needs to be dialed in differently.

IMO, there's no amount of moving the mic and throwing different mics going to counter phase cancellation from standing waves inside the cab, so I personally don't even bother with Orange cabs, anymore. But that's JME. I've heard a few clips where they sound fine, but in most of them, I hear the mids that I'm talking about.

It's a shame, because they're built well. Complete opposite of modern Marshall cabs which if you look inside of, you'd be scared about it coming apart at any moment, LOL.

I actually like the cheaper Orange cabs better with their own "Voice Of The World" speakers. I think those are what's in my CR120 Combo as well and I prefered the sound of the combo to the sound of the head going into a PPC2x12 w/ the V30's which is one of he reasons I bought it. (Also it was cheaper :p)..But honestly did think the combo sounded absolutely fantastic out of the box. It's a semi-open back and just sounded bigger and better to me..

I actually hate mic'ing cabs myself and the few times I have got it right (like up ^^ there w/ the Bugera) I think have been dumb luck more than anything. It's the reason I would rather go direct with IR's. When we play live we have a sound guy who's been with us for years & is practically the fifth member of the band who's all round excellent at getting me the sound I want (he does the cab micing & everything else lol) so all I need to do is get drunk & play :bigthumb:

Oh, I love Covenant, LOL. But that doesn't sound too Doom-y to me? Or Orange-y.

But yeah, I hate the whole neckbeard, plaid shirt, beer gut, face tattoo approach to Doom some bands have.

And I also like working with IR's, but TBH, I greatly miss mic'ing my old Marshall cab and experimenting with different speakers in it. I miss that cab.

Well Covenant definately has elements of the kind of doom I like (God Of Emptiness) or just that dark, creepy vibe in general that I've always been into. I'm a huge MA fan and fan of late 80's/early 90's death metal in general...

As for Orange, I'm also a huge Sabbath fan (every era) and yeah, the early stuff was Laney (well, it's been Laney almost right through) but it could just as well have been Orange..their amps's have the early Sabbath Sound down pat imo...

Yeah, hipster doom or just any meandering over-slow boring tuneless derivative doom is'nt my thing either...

Still no sign of my Two Notes Captor X.. so I got tired of waiting & did a direct recording (solo) using the FX loop send (preamp out)..

That went into my little Zoom G1X Four modeler (just using the Marshall 1960 cab/IR from there) into my interface. Some onboard reverb from the amp...it's bit ghetto but at least I got to record it...sounds ok though not really the same as what comes out of the speaker , but eh, it's a start till I get the Captor X :bigthumb:

...and I just picked up a Sennheiser e906 on Amazon. High time I got a decent mic.

I like the fact that I can just hang it over the top of the cab and get going asap :bigthumb:

...so from tomorrow onwards I can start piling up the clips in here :D

Sure...why not? Doom and chug make good bedfellows :bigthumb:

With my band (s) ..it's always been elements of Doom mixed with (old school) Death metal ..just so long as there's a sort of macabre/sinister vibe to it :bigthumb::

Man ..I would love for this ("Death Throes" Autopsy-inspired side project) to be completed and see the light of day....Vik's been dragging his feet with the vocals though :(

..and here ..much faster (but no brighter :lmao:)

Oh, I love the 906. Kind of expensive too.

The 609 I don't have great experiences with, but the 906 is killer. Really natural-sounding. Much less colored than a 57 when you want that. I don't even know why they decided to call the 609 that when it sounds NOTHING like the 906.

Yeah the 906 is the one I got .It's slightly pricey (equivalent of about $175 here)..but not crazy expensive like some condensers/ribbon mics etc are. It' high time I got a decent recording mic anyway...we used one to record guitars for this cover track at a studio a friend of mine owns...it had a full, warm, natural sound... sounded nicer than with the SM57 we tried before.

The 609 sounds a bit thinner/brighter/more compressed (ie,...flatter, especially in the mids) in the 609/906 comparison video's I've seen..I'm not crazy about it from what I've heard.
