600 would be a smoking deal(might be hard to find for the price) on a mesa f30

If you get lucky you could find a nice JCM 800 2204 used for about that price. Besides that, sometimes ya can find Peavey 5150's cheap, I saw a 5150 combo once for about 450 at a local store.

Both those can be real killer metal amps.

Ya i like that harsh ss sound and i find it perfectly fine when used at gig volume. At gig volume tubes sound awesome too but am i the only one that likes the solid state? haha

Rock on man... I too like that sound at gig/band volumes. There's just something about the feel.. plus I love Pantera and Dime's tone was the most amazing and monstrous SS tone I've ever heard. He gave me the taste for SS really.

That said I voted tube... I would still love to own a Mesa... I'm looking at the Single Recto.

Re: Solid State Vs. Tube

i don't care how an amp or modeler is made or what technology it uses. i've heard both tube amps and ss amps that suck to make generalizations. I try it out, then worry about how it is made.

Re: Solid State Vs. Tube

No preference. Each has their advantages and disadvantages.

I love the full-on tube roar of my Silver Jubilee but it isn't always practical to use it to its full potential. My Tech 21 TM60 is a versatile, portable grab-and-go amp that has some excellent tones at all volumes.

Re: Solid State Vs. Tube

My tone is pretty thick, midrangy and warm. SS doesnt really do that to my experience so ideally for me i prefer tubes. I practise with my cube though, does the trick really well for that.

Re: Solid State Vs. Tube

Tube, solid state just sounds cheap and unprofessional compared to the warmness of a good tube amp cranked in my opinion.

OH how do you like the cube, I was thinking that friend get one of those or pod for his first amp.

Re: Solid State Vs. Tube

I own a Hybrid Marshall Avt150 which i really like, i also own a Peavey 5150 valve amp and a boutique 10w Marshall Super lead clone.

The 5150 seems to have a really brutalness about it, rather a compressed sounding amp, but by far the best sounding rhythm amp for metal, i tried a Jsx the other day and i wasnt all that impressed. now as much as i am not a valve snob, i have never experienced a SS with the roar of my 5150, or the organic sound of my Super Lead clone, theres just something unique about them, and solid states always have less balls.

2 days ago i tried my dream amp in a shop, a Cornford Hellcat, it was a 2x12 combo priced at £2000, i played around for about 30 mins, and i just couldent beleive how alive and amazing the amp sounded, how amazing the natural feedback was, and the sustain on the notes, how it managed to be high gain yet still keep the dynamics of the guitar and playing, the vintage and modern channels both sounded huge, and articulate, i would seriously have given my very much loved 5150 right there on the spot for this amp, though it didnt sound as brutal or as heavy it just seemed to be perfect.

on the way home i stopped into my friends band practice, he also has a Marshall avt150 combo, an amp that i have always considered to be a very nice amp with lovely tone and superb lead and vintage sounds, after listening i wanted to go over and check if the settings were bad or something, it simply sounded dead, and weak, the cornford valve amp was so good, i want to beleive that cheap affordable SS amps can be as good, but so far they just arent, not even close.

Re: Solid State Vs. Tube

exactly the way I feel. We have a pretty decent 100+? watt SS fender amp (name doesn't come to mind) in band class and it has ok distortion, and ok cleans. But when I come home to my DRRI or play at a football game with my DRRI, it's just SO far out there tone-wise.

I turn the amp up and in its surrender to the excess volume it ends up sounding better and better. You could feel the amp with the dynamics of every note you hit. In my experience, when a SS amp is turned up, it gets nasty sounding and harsh, and never really reacts interactively with the player like an all tube amp.

Peavey ValveKing Combo, 60W all tube, sells for around $350, can't beat that. http://www.peavey.com/news/article.cfm/action/view/id/132/20052107.cfm

I'm waiting for the heads to come out so I can try one.

Re: Solid State Vs. Tube

Okay I just voted for tubes so now the results are even more one sided. I have to say that I've played some SS amps that sounded pretty good for home practice/bedroom jamming, a friend of mine has a Tech 21, I think it's a trademark 10 and that thing is a solid piece of gear for the buck and for the intended volume. I like it's tone more than any modleing amps like Line 6 that I've played. But keep in mind that I mentioned volume, this is where tube amps kill SS amps IMO. Crank a good tube amp and it just gets better, crank a solid state and it sounds worse after a point, which in my experience is usually much lower than gigging or band practice levels. Also the way mid frequencies respond on most solid state amps I've played is just no good. I primarily play high gain metal, and I don't like to scoop my mids (they stayed dimed on my favorite amp) the mids should be a strong point for a guitar amp not a weak one IMO. Now this could be a matter of how most of the SS amps I've played were voiced for their intented market but to me they all just had the swarm of bees tone witout any real muscle or soul. I've never played a SS state amp that cut through for a live mix where there was alot of gain or volume going on, I'm not saying they're all crap, I just prefer tubes whenever, volume, cutting tone, or muscle is involved, and they just so happen to make great clean tones too.

I know i know! But when i go to rehearsal studios i tend to use 5150s, laney GH series or JCM 900s. Im saving for a tube amp and selling my POD and MG.

Re: Solid State Vs. Tube

i prefer a solid state for its upper end clarity. i'm not into SS units which banks on tube-emulation, there are too many of these around.
