Re: Solid State Vs. Tube

I started playing guitar in 1989 or so. As a kid learning how stuff works I was right in the middle of lingering solid state minded 80s gear and the emergance of tubes as a trendy marketing thing. I've played soooo many amps in my life and there are few solid state amps that have done it for me with an electric guitar. Everytime I try one I'll try a tube amp right after it and it is always night and day for me. Tube amps just kick ass...I think the big thing for me is how quickly they respond and how present they sound. Notes don't jump out of a SS amp the same way as a tube amp...even a cheap, crappy tube amp.

All that said, I want an Acoustic Image Clarus. It is a killer amp for acoustic guitar, bass, and hollowbody jazz kind of stuff. It will also fit in your butt, which makes it easy to transport(though uncomfortable). :D

Could you guys help me with some more tube amps????

For a metal sound I guess a mesa combo or head would work great. For me I like the marshall tone so I went with a jcm 900. Other people probably know of other choices in the 900 series, but I heard that either the 2100/2500's regular or slx versions are the best in the 900 series. These amps can have a lot of gain.

Tube amps, when they can be played above 3.

Vox modeler, when I'm sitting down at night practicing.

No need to be a snob for tube or SS. A carpenter doesn't use a sledgehammer to drive tacks, and he doesn't use a tack hammer to smash concrete.

tube snob all the way. Too bad i can't afford more, haha. I've got my 66 bassman which is my favorite amp ever... and in my dorm i've got a silverface vibrochamp that i've borrowed which has cleans to die for.

Re: Solid State Vs. Tube

I have a fickle friend who buys and sells gear quite regularly, and through him, I've been able to try a number of very nice tube amps: Shiva (EL84 and 6L6), VibroKing, Metropolis, Deluxe Reverb-I really think that after one hears a few nice tube amps, the subtleties of your playing-fingers/pick attack-will really be accentuated. Huge, wide open rich sounds. I've not been able to get "that" through a SS amp.
