Some guitars styles you hate, but someone else likes...

Re: Some guitars styles you hate, but someone else likes...

Never knew why more companies don't build tele-sounding guitars with the same bridge/materials etc but slim/bevel the thing a little. Their "garage prototype" aesthetic definitely isn't for everyone.

Gotta disagree on Les Pauls though. They come in every finish from plain black to outrageous pearloid gaudy, but doesn't just about every guitar?

Re: Some guitars styles you hate, but someone else likes...

What I mean is, while those finishes would maybe suit a super-strat/pointy just fine ...for something that looks like an LP, I personally prefer burgundy/black/tobacco burst-type finishes...ie something sober...frankly they'd all look way cooler to me with a matte finish...

Maybe it's just me, but the Flying V goes beyond "I wouldn't play it myself" to "I really can't take someone's music seriously when they're playing one of these". I know it's just psychological, especially since I'm not nearly so rabid about any other extreme body style in anyone else's hands, I simply cannot get past the shape.

This is probably going to pi$$ off some people but I cant stand L.P's!!! They sound alright but the switch placement just sucks, they are stupid heavy, super overpriced for what you get, (especially these days) & I never really liked the feel of them or the whole solid body acoustic look. Its like someone filled a shallow body acoustic with clay & tossed in some P.A,F's? There's other Gibson guitars that I find much more desirable, I love Explorers & god willing I will get my hands on a 90's Gibson 2 pickup Nighthawk one of these days! The classic L.P. style just doesn't jell with me, if I'm sitting down it's not a bad guitar but for the money I'd definitely get something else! Also, & I'm sure many people would argue against this but to me they pretty much all sound a like, as long as they are from the same general era that is?

By this I mean if your put 10 guys in a room with a L.P. a Marshal then have them play a riff 9 out of 10 of them would sound exactly the same, where as if you were to give the same 10 guys a Strata & them play the same riff out of the same amplifier they would all sound great but a little bit different because the instrument that is the STRATOCASTER lets the players character flow through it much better than Gibson's do as a whole, but especially the L.P.'s! Basically, again just my opinion, L.P.'s sound like L.P.'s but Strat's & Tele's sound like the guy playing them???

Re: Some guitars styles you hate, but someone else likes...

I love Fender and Gibson style guitars, regardless where and who makes them...

I dislike Kramers, Ovations, Peavey and Ibanez style guitars...

What are your likes and dislikes in guitars styles?

I hate electric 9 string Ukuleles with EMG pickups, scalloped fingerboards, Kahler terms and hot pink finishes.

I totally respect the guys who play them though

with single coils i agree stats and teles are far more transparent because the wider dynamic range picks up more "nuances"

with humbuckers though?? just different shapes, they all take on the character of the humbuckers in em, strat or lp or whatever

Re: Some guitars styles you hate, but someone else likes...

I agree that LPs are a nightmare to play, still the most uncomfortable guitars I ever played, but I think it doesn't look bad and it sounds fantastic.

Don't know about the notion of everyone sounding the same though. I mean, with trained ears you can hear that someone's playing an LP, an SG or a Tele. A Strat is a bit more versatile, there's no denying that, but it's far from "these guitars sound different and those always sound the same".

Re: Some guitars styles you hate, but someone else likes...

I don't care for Floyds, pointy headstock's, reverse headstock's, or "metal" guitars in general. Having said that, I'm surprised by how much I like my Warlock.

Nah. I posted that acquisition quite some time ago. I just haven't done much with it since.

Re: Some guitars styles you hate, but someone else likes...

I never found the Telecaster attractive.
I also agree that strange shape IE: iceman, flying V and most BC rich styles are not for me either.

I agree . I find the telecaster an unattractive guitar. And most B.C Rich as well, except for one The Eagle1 Onyx Arch top

Re: Some guitars styles you hate, but someone else likes...

I hate the look of the LP. I find the necks too chunky and uncomfortable, and the body shape doesn't fit well with mine. Ace Frehley and Slash are two of my fave players, and the LP sound is iconic. I just hate the look. Actually, I dislike most single cutout guitars. Not fond of the telecaster either.

I tried playing a couple of SGs and they just felt dead and lifeless in my hands.

I like most other double-cut styles. Jacksons and Ibanez are my faves, as I love the thin, fast necks. And I adore the signature strat look and sound. My guilty pleasure is my Dean V. I didn't think I'd like it but it is so comfortable to play, either standing or sitting. I have a BC Rich Virgin, but I'm really not overly fond of the look of it.

Re: Some guitars styles you hate, but someone else likes...

For me, pointies or 24 fretters are the ones I don't like. I need a balanced, ergonomic instrument, and 24 frets really kill the tone of the neck pickup for me.

I have a love/hate relationship with my 24-fret Ibanez RG for exactly that reason. It's kinda nice sometimes to have the extra couple of frets, but more often I find myself thinking, "Man... if only that neck pickup could be pushed back a little!" It doesn't sound BAD, but I know it COULD sound BETTER.

My new BC Rich Perfect 10 (which is the pointiest guitar I've ever owned) is a 24-fretter as well. Being set up similar to a 12-string, I can't help but wonder why someone would play it that far up the neck... it just gets wonky up there on those doubled strings with the slightest bend. Would've made far more sense to me to go with 22 frets and a richer tone from the neck pup.

Dean ML.

I'd play them if they had a 25.5" scale. I just don't like anything shorter than that. (I'd also move the jack to the side of the body rather than the front.)

I understand your reasoning...but I have to say I love the Warmoth 7/8 Warhead necks that have 24 frets with the Gibson Scale...killer smooth tone in the neck (but that may just be the Phat Cat ;) )

Re: Some guitars styles you hate, but someone else likes...

Honestly, I just dislike seeing a guitar strapped on somebody that is a mismatch to their musical style, overall look, band image, age, and vibe.
If it really fits, fine with me. If your music dictates a certain style, and you can rock it, great!

I prefer classics in manly finishes....no surfy pastels, graphics, metal guitars, plastic, etc. I don't hate them, but if they look silly on you, everyone will know it and naturally form their own opinion about you. That's what your choice will do.

Kerry King would look stupid with a walnut LP or butterscotch tele. Brent Mason or Rich Robinson would look ridiculous with a silver sparkle King V.

I don't like using "typical" guitars that someone would expect for a certain genre (exception, my Epi Casino with Hot P-90's; that thing was a beast for jazz band in high school). So I tend to use semi-hollow guitars for metal music. I played small shows where I was the only 335 player in a sea of Ibby's, Gibby's, and ESP's.
