AIR ZONE! just bought one to replace my tone zone and i can tell you they are very different.
the air one is much more open and dynamic, plus tones more articulate.
clarity to die for and it gets those late 80's 90's tones with ease.
sounds to me like a super fat higher output paf or something?
it is like a JB with a deeper tone but is just as rich in harmonics and sings like a canary
oh you just got one? i am replacing the tone zone in my strat actually. should i go with what you did and get one my self? how are the cleans? are they better? are there more highs? is it less muddy? i have to know these things!

i bought mine at GC yesterday, and it is very impressive!
smoother highs, more focused lows, and a overall more vintage tone
picture a paf but fatter.
it sings like the JB for leads but has a deeper voice. kind of like alto vs tenor :laugh2:

much more articulate than the TZ and JB

Re: Sorry, DiMarzio user,s please.

Joe Satriani's setup is great, He uses a Paf Pro in the neck (new Paf Joe you could try too) and a Fred in the bridge. They are real balanced, even, and awesome sounding pickups. I think it's a decent starting point.

Early on Paul Gilbert used Super Distortions, that might be worth trying in the bridge, but it's pretty hot.

the Air Norton neck and Tone Zone bridge combo isn't bad though.

Just trying to give you a starting point, stuff to look into.

When really looking for a certain type of tone...that really starts with the amp IMO. The amp should get you about 75% of the way there...the pickups I've found just get you the rest of the way.

For instance, I have a Peavey XXX....it does 80's metal tones without even trying. I can do them with almost any pickup....BUT there are some pickups that sound better than other for the tones I'm trying to get.

If you're nowhere in the ballpark, I'd suggest looking into a new amp first IMO.

It's the same reason why there are people complaining they can't get the EVH tone even though they have the EVH custom shop pickup yet they're playing out of a Fender Deluxe or something.....it just doesn't work.

Nice review on those pickups Kent...I've had the same impressions of the ones I've tried.

Thanks you ... :) A good point with this post to as when you think about it the only thing the pup does it tell the amp what to produce, sure it soounds different clean, but under overdrive the tonal characteristics of the pup tend to tell the amp which frequency regions to distort more, so it alters the character of the distortion ... but say if for instance you are try to get a scooped metal distortion and your amp can't scoop out the mids post distortion, and just doesn't have the presence and low end ... well a pickup won't fix that. However say if you like the distortion, but say the guitar could just be thicker, of have more bite, or be clearer sounding on chords, or a little tighter on the low end. A new pup can most certainly help with that, just another perspective.

with that combo i find the air norton to be to warm and the tone zone to be just crap. i have an air norton\super distortion combo in my main strat and i find it to be a great shred combo(especially with the air norton)

Re: Sorry, DiMarzio user,s please.

if you want a good shredding neck pickup i would go with the air norton. its very warm but also very clear and not muddy at all.

Re: Sorry, DiMarzio user,s please.

damn!
this makes me want to get a double humbucker guitar and make it my shred guitar! :yell:

Re: Sorry, DiMarzio user,s please.

I just cant find my perfect sound, i know some do and others never bust that cherry but im sick and tired of buying pup after pup and getting let down.

im playing through a Crate GT1200 1/2 stack right know,

Your choice of amp and the settings on that amp have a much bigger influence on the nature and quality of your sound than your choice of pickups. Keep changing pickups all you want, but you'll still sound like your playing through a Crate amp.

As far as DiMarzio's go for the type of sound you want a PAF Pro/PAF Pro (neck/bridge) combination or a PAF Pro/Super Distortion combination is hard to beat. There are lots of other great DiMarzio choices, but those two combinations are the obvious choices for the type of sound you seem to be looking for. Be very sure to experiment with pickup height for optimal tone and balance. The same pickup at different heights can sound either sweet and toneful, or sour and harsh.

Re: Sorry, DiMarzio user,s please.

Thanks for all the great suggestions guys, buy one thing, why dose everyone keep slamming my amp ? Sorry i cant afford a JCM800, and the Crate gives me everything i need, 120wtts, 3ch's, 4 12's, etc. I love it, maybe one of these days i can bump it up to a Marshall or MESA, but untill then im 100% cool with my rig.

Re: Sorry, DiMarzio user,s please.

Hails RACERX i had a crate gx80.. 1x12
and a boss metalzone that i still own
do you want to hear some clips i did with that gear?
give me your email in the PM

Re: Sorry, DiMarzio user,s please.

Close, but better. I can live with it, with just a little more tweeking. Thank you my friend.

Re: Sorry, DiMarzio user,s please.

I LOVE Paul Gilbert's tone. I suppose it explains why I have both Tone Zone and Super Distortion pickups :)

Thus, I say Humbucker From Hell neck and Tone Zone bridge.

\m/(00)\m/, I take it, you watched that DiMarzio video with Paul Gilbert as well? I dug that Gilbert Les Paul :13:

for shred the tone zone is great and the super II makes a good neck pup for it
the super II is right in between the paf pro and HFH tone wise but has more power and harmonics. and Paul gilbert uses all of them in various guitars
racer X i sent you a PM and Email about something concerning this :)

it's his favorite pickup that goeas Aww.
and he used to wire all his pickups in parallel for a much cleaner sound, even the distortion was a bit cleaner. but what he found out was that with a single coil in the middle you can get the best of both worlds, you can still get that heavy metal brigde tone and then you can have it on the single coil and the bridge pickup with the volume up only a little bit and still get that kinda jimi hendrix sound.

nah, never seen it in my life
