I really REALLY want to put the JB and 59 in my guitar

The biggest issue.... I want double cream

I called in to order these under covers... Its a bit more than twice the price. It isn't cheap.

I was thinking about trying to swing it, but I have put it on hold for almost a year because of this price jump. It sucks... But this is a guitar that I love and call me shallow... But I want my double cream in it. I think it would look sexy as hell. This is a 30 year old complete custom order semi hollow from ESP that was about $4 - $5k and ... Well... I want what I want.


Problem is I have about $10 k I am currently paying down into a PA system and just cant swing the cost of the custom shop being twice as much. So I have been waiting... But the itch is here again.

So without further ado...

Help?

A near exact sound of these two pickups possible?

There really isn't a DiMarzio set that exactly matches the JB and '59. The closest I can think of would be an original Evolution in the bridge (a bit hotter, but similar tone) and either a 36th Anniversary PAF or possibly a PAF Pro in the neck position.

So, you are willing to put cosmetics over performance? Can't say that I have much sympathy.

36th PAF might be alright in the neck. The Andy Timmons model is not a JB clone or anything like that, but you can take solace in knowing that Andy likes the JB and has used them in the past. So I think that's a case of "if you like the JB you may also like the AT."

My favorite DMZ combo is Tone Zone / Air Norton, but I'd say they're closer to a Custom & Jazz than a JB & '59.

I like the JB and did not like the AT-1 at all, although I love what Andy Timmons does with it. There is no Dimarzio very close to a JB. The Breed Bridge, Air Zone, and Fred are in the ballpark. The 36th neck is closer to the 59 than those are to the JB.

you can always buy the pickups you want on double parchment and dye them to your preferred tone of cream

dying double parchment or even double white to double cream is a well documented procedure here in the forum, also, you don't really need to dye them actually you can just play your guitar with some dirt in your hands a couple times also let it resting under direct sunlight then you only need to seal the color with something, you can use spray lacquer, tru oil or even nail polish

also ordering the pickups with the antiquity treatment is a good idea as it also gives a dirty aged look to the already parchment color, that way you will only need to dip the pickup on coffee a couple times until you hit the exact shade of cream

I'd agree with the regular 36th anniversary in the neck

I'd have to suggest the Dominion in the bridge for a JB alternative. The AT1 is a little too soft/smooth.


If you could be a little more specific as to your goals in the neck, there might be additional options...such as the Bluesbucker.

I've tried coffee and tea staining Strat pickguards to create a particular "aged white" with no luck, only to learn that some plastics are particularly resistant to staining, while others aren't. Is there an unspoken assurance that the white or parchment Seymour Duncan humbuckers will take to staining?

well at least the white and parchment used on pearly gates, antiquities and 80's duncans, modern white seems more resistant to dying, anyway letting it rest on direct sunlight is how old plastic turns yellow-ish, butyrate bobbins will surely dye regardless you want it or not they will start to look dirt with the time until they turn totally creme, depending on how often you wash your hands before playing and the contact with direct sunlight a perfect white butyrate bobbin can get a creamier than parchment color in just about a year and half

Paf 36/AT-1 should be close enough. Not 1:1 close, but similar.

The solution is to buy two sets of p'ups: one zebra and one reverse zebra. Take'em apart and put the cream coils of each p'up together, so your end up with a double cream set and a double black set. Sell the double black set and be happy ever after.

Double cream; the pickup equivalent of a Cuban cigar. Except that Cuban cigars eventually became available.

I hear double creams sound AMAZING. Something about the pigment in the plastic...

It's because the wavelength of the cream color lines up with 440hz creating additional harmonics.

What about plastikote paint? Mask off the pole pieces with wax then paint them.

First... No, I don't plan on sacrificing tone for cosmetics. But, I like what I like and this is a guitar thats going to the grave with me. Can't say I was looking for sympathy, rather looking for ideas; but, thanks for the thought.:wink:

Dirt, sun, dye, plasti dip are all things I am not entirely comfortable doing to the pickups or guitar.

I suppose I will continue to wait it out and when done paying down the PA system I'll shell out the extra cash for the custom shop under covers.

Doesn't really sound like there is an equivalent.

The reason for this particular choice of pickups is to avoid the never ending buy and return cycle. I had this set in another guitar of similar construction and thought they sounded great. Its a known set I enjoyed.

Here's the guitar I'd like these in. I will be doing a full gutting and replace all wires, pots, pups, etc .... When I start this project. Possibly even the rings to split them or any other tonal options I think may benefit when I start this. I may look for different options that would be available for tonal variances as splitting coils has never really been a sound I have enjoyed. Thats what my strat is for.

Now if I could some how get this to sound like a strat whenever I wanted as we this would be sweet... Do they make an option that quickly converts the neck to a bolt on and 25.5 scale and back with the click of a button? :bigeyes:

Hmmmm... My other obstacle is knowing IF these pups would sound the same in this guitar.

The only thing I know about the woods it was constructed with is the cap being a full thick flame maple cap. Neck, back, body, ect I am clueless and lack the knowledge to identify.

How much would (wood? :wink:) the other woods effect the overall tonal characteristics of which pickups I choose for the guitar?

the most JBish dimarzio offers is the NORTON...
not the air-norton...
the usual norton...
