Sorry.... So ... So ... Sorry.... Dimarzio pickup equivalent. 59 neck JB bridge

Re: Sorry.... So ... So ... Sorry.... Dimarzio pickup equivalent. 59 neck JB bridge

If the color is that important to you and you are willing to drop $10k on a PA system then wait and save up for the extra bucks to get the custom order of double creme under the covers...it's not that much more money for the custom shop.

Re: Sorry.... So ... So ... Sorry.... Dimarzio pickup equivalent. 59 neck JB bridge

the most JBish dimarzio offers is the NORTON...
not the air-norton...
the usual norton...

To my ears, the regular Norton sounds more like a CustomCustom with more presence and a slightly tighter low end.

Ok, trying to be helpful now.

How about stickers?!

I was in the same boat with a Les Paul I really wanted double creams in. My "go-to" set at the time was a Duncan Distortion and 59n. I went with a Tone Zone bridge and 36th neck in cream. It got me in the ballpark but eventually I swapped them out for Zebra Duncans. I was never 100% satisfied with the tone of the Dimarzios.........or any Dimarzio to be honest!

Bobbin Toppers? I posted the link in another thread a while back, kind of as a joke. Just google "bobbin toppers".

Let's dash this hope right now. You cannot order double cream under a cover from the Custom Shop. Your'e best bet (about the same price) is to make them yourself with 2 sets of pickups.

Re: Sorry.... So ... So ... Sorry.... Dimarzio pickup equivalent. 59 neck JB bridge

My starting point would be a 36th PAF neck and AT-1 bridge. Although I think zebra would look killer in that guitar.

This... the AT-1 is my favorite DMZ

Hmmm...I thought some guys had done this? Or are those tales just fables?

It used to be an option, but those days are behind us.

Bare Knuckle Rebel Yell. You'll be more than happy, I promise!

I like the JB and did not like the AT-1 at all, although I love what Andy Timmons does with it.

My thoughts exactly. It has waay too much midrange, and it gets very honkey when you back it off the strings. I took advantage of their exchange program and traded it for an Air Norton.

Re: Sorry.... So ... So ... Sorry.... Dimarzio pickup equivalent. 59 neck JB bridge

..... but if you're dead set on the JB/59, just get a pair of zebras and a pair of reverse zebras, and sell the black set you end up with to offset the cost. Black pups have never been hard to sell.

Re: Sorry.... So ... So ... Sorry.... Dimarzio pickup equivalent. 59 neck JB bridge

First of all, nice guitar!!!! And, yes, since it is that special AND that pricey, I cant blame you for wanting to have the pickups look right too. And, as others have said, Dimarzios just dont sound like Duncans. I cant find the warmth or "soul" with Dimarzios. Sadly, Mr Dimarzio has a well documented stranglehold on double creams. SO, I was thinking all along to suggest a couple of things suggested in the last few replies. Either go with bobbin toppers or a different brand. The Bare Knuckles Rebel Yell is a great pickup that was derived from the JB. I believe the Motorcity AFWAYU also was. I dont know if they can do double creams tho. Good luck!

Re: Sorry.... So ... So ... Sorry.... Dimarzio pickup equivalent. 59 neck JB bridge

Hmmmm... My other obstacle is knowing IF these pups would sound the same in this guitar.

The only thing I know about the woods it was constructed with is the cap being a full thick flame maple cap. Neck, back, body, ect I am clueless and lack the knowledge to identify.

How much would (wood?) the other woods effect the overall tonal characteristics of which pickups I choose for the guitar?

Would sound the same as what?? What is your reference guitar? Obviously the construction of the guitar will have some bearing on the tone. I know you said you are unsure of the woods.. If your reference guitar is say, an Ibanez with a floating trem, the difference is going to be greater than a Les Paul. Your guitar has a thick maple top, which adds some brightness. And normally, if a thick maple cap is used, the back wood will be mahogany or alder to add warmth for balance to the top. The wilkinson trem doesnt taint the tone as much as say a FLoyd would, due to the Wilkie not requiring so much wood being routed out.

Has the OP ever called DiMarzio to ask what models would serve him best? Otherwise, it's like going to a Ford dealer to ask what Dodge would suit his needs.

I was tempted to correct your analogy by using different makes of cars that would represent how I feel about both pickup brands but I won't do that [emoji16]
