Soundclip Shootout: Custom vs Custom UOA5

I give you the shootout that no one has been asking for: Custom Ceramic vs. Custom UOA5! Why not A8? I don't have an A8 right now, just a UOA5...so what the hell, why not?

I needed to warm up this bright as hell agile, what do you think? I am loving the uoa5 and I have played with it exactly as long as these clips. Time to pick up the guitar again now.

For each clip is goes Custom first, Custom UOA5 second
1.) Clean
2.) Clean, SD-1
3.) Ultra
4.) Ultra, SD-1

Re: Soundclip Shootout: Custom vs Custom UOA5

Full disclosure: I pulled up the volume on the distorted uoa5 clips in Reaper (post recording). I forgot to measure pickup height...that combined with already higher output on ceramic made for a huge volume difference. Only on the distorted clips for some reason. Who knows, I could have messed it up in other ways too, but you can hear the basic difference between these pickups.

I am blown away by the UOA5. Warmer, crunchier, painful squeaky treble detail removed, more dynamics of course, and when I pummel the palm mutes it still sounds super tight. Perfect match for my Agile 3100!

Nope, but no worries, haven't been in to check the mail yet this week, as you can see I'm screwing around with magnet swaps instead of working :biglaugh:

I'm not trying out for Mastodon, any relevant thoughts about the clips? If I remember right you've recommended the UOA5 before and specifically mentioned metal so for that I thank you.

Re: Soundclip Shootout: Custom vs Custom UOA5

I think a regular C5 vs Cuo5 would probably be a more meaningful comparison?

LOL, just breaking your balls a little man.

I don't have clips, but I pretty much hated the C5 and liked the CUOA5 well enough that I kept it for a bit before I tried the C8. I moved on to the COC, which was my favorite.

Re: Soundclip Shootout: Custom vs Custom UOA5

The most noticeable effect was a drop in output, rather than a change in tone. The second clip only sounds half as loud.

+1. I was the first guy here to try UOA5's when we 'discovered' Addiction. I still think it's a great magnet. I have them in PAF's, high output HB's, medium output HB's, and P-90's. Like you said: warm & crunchy with dynamics, and no harsh treble. What's not to like? I had a couple Customs (awful), which became C8's, which have since become C UOA5's. I think it's the best of the Custom family, at least for blues and classic rock.

I'm very interested in the COC, but I don't think I can handle that treble in this particular guitar. I have a detonator that will become a deton8tor, so that will leave me with an OC for future use :33:

Re: Soundclip Shootout: Custom vs Custom UOA5

I've got a Custom UOA5 in my Jesuscaster, and it sounds like vintage PAF on steroids. It's crunchy, warm, and it smokes.

the Deton8tor will be the pickup in the new Avril Lavigne Gibson les Paul sig model.. Only $5000!!

Sorry, just couldnt help it...:laugh2:

Re: Soundclip Shootout: Custom vs Custom UOA5

I've changed a magnet from a Custom to a UOC5, and did notice a drop in output, but it is a more toneful pickup. I'd like to see what an Unoriented Roughcast A5 does in a 59n.

I'm thinking it's like a C5/59 made to be more A5 PAF sounding, but still calibrated like a modern set.

If you put the OUA5 mags into that C5/59n of yours, you'll be in for a treat of vintageness you've never heard before.

FWIW, the UOA5 became my favorite neck position mag for Gibson '57 Classic and 490R p'ups, taking over from my usual A4.

For Duncans I still like the A4/A8 better, but the UOA5 is a great alternative when the A8 gets too much of a good thing in certain hollow and semi-hollow guitars and when there's not enough sizzle with the A4 in the neck position.

If you suddenly wanna have instant Page tone in you LP, an UOA5 Seth Lover set is just a blast of the past! You've gotta hear it to believe it; it's so close that's downright scary!

HTH,

I have a UOA5 waiting to go into a 59 neck. If that works out then I'll be changing most of my strats to full HH instead of single humbuckers in the neck. The UOA5 should take away a little bass, add a little mids, and sweeten the top end. That's what it did in the other pickups I put it in. +1 for a UOA5 in a JB too.

Re: Soundclip Shootout: Custom vs Custom UOA5

The Custom sounds better for everything except the clean clip.
