Sovtek LPS Vs. Electro Harmonix

I'm trying to decide which 12ax7 to use in the phase inverter slot. What are the noticeable differences in these two? If anyone has used them both let me know what you thought of each. I really need to get these things ordered. Thanks.

the EHX is dark and quiet

the LPS is a but more bright and agressive in the upper mids.

If you're using it in the PI you probably won't hear the difference one way or the other...............I don't think the Sovtek LPS is recomended for use as a PI, something about it not holding up in that position.

This is the position Doug's Tubes recommended it for. I haven't heard about it not holding up there. He originally recommended the EH, but when I e-mailed him again to confirm what I needed, he switched to the Sovtek.

If he recomends it then I'd say it's safe! He's never steered me wrong in suggesting tubes for my amps...........I highly recomend him!

I trust him. The problem is he suggested one then the other.

I might go with the EH, too. I've had pretty good luck witht he EH tubes. I wouldn't define them as dark--though I would use that word to describe JJ's. The EH tubes have held up well in my Mesa amps.

That said, I never dealt with Doug, but he has a really good rep, and I don't think he'd steer you wrong. There's no reason in my mind to NOT use the Sovtek in that slot. And when you think about it--the EH tube IS a Sovtek.

I find EH to be very toppy and quite gainy with a lot of upper mids, I think the LPS is a cleaner yet still bright tube. They are both made at the same factory aren't they? Neither one does much for me....

I had a lps in the inverter for a few months, now I have a penta labs 12ax7 not balanced and it sounds better! have to play loud to really tell! Of allll! the premap tubes form Nos telekunkens to RFT's, groove tube mullard and so on the mesa preamps sounds the best for my high gain bugera! has a better smoother crunch, These look the same as the jj's 83's i think. figured I try mesa again since they test there tubes and i was surprised! It earned the v1 and v2 spot for now at least lol! These have the smaller plates that probley why I like them over the long plate.
