I am in the process of changing my speaker configuation in my 4x12 right now, in anticipation of getting a new amp at some point in the next 60 days. I realize that whatever amp I choose will have it's own combo of speakers that sound best, but I just wanted some general opinions.
My cab now has the standard G12T-75 compliment. Fairly well broken in, and I don't dislike the tone overall, at all. However, the 75's are agressive, tight in the lows and tight in the highs, with a relaxed or level midrange....which makes them work well with a mid heavy amp like my JCM800. However, so many of the recordings I like have been made with the Greenbacks...the G12M.
So I took the 20 year old G12T's out of my combo, which are extremely well broken in, and put one on the top and one on the bottom of the cab. Gr8scott picked up 2 Mojo Greenback clones for me today, and I am going to put those in the other two slots.
Do you all think this will be a good combo? A mid heavy, sweet, woody, early breakup speaker to compliment the tights lows and highs of the 75's? The amp I get next will either be a Trainwreck/Komet type one channel design, or suprisingly a Mesa Stilleto Ace. Two completely different amps, but EL34 based.
The next speaker I'd try would be the G12H-30 if the Greenbacks didn't work out. I'm not a huge V30 fan, but maybe the amps I'm looking at will like them?
I only have one 4x12, and am not interested in buying another, so I'd like to have a cab that sounds good with several different amps, if possible, because the JCM800 is never going away...I'm only going to add to the collection.
Thanks.
