speaker hunt; warmth needed

FuseG4

Our Neighbor Totoro
I'm gonna try and squeeze a lil more "fatness" out of my DSL. The speaker i have is pretty bright, and breaks up pretty quick and not in the smoothest way (heck it was a $30 speaker, so i guess it's OK for the price). It's a celestion super 65. The cab is a smallish MDF vox 1x12 but I'm not gonna worry about cabinet construction at this stage. The cab has been fine with other speakers.

I'm looking for a warm, clear speaker with a slightly rounder kinda bass and definitely a rolled off top end. I need the speaker to be more than 50W, preferably more than 60, as my amp is 50W.

I'd like to stay 16Ω as the 8ohm tap on DSLs are known to short out because of some grounding issue, so although mine works I'm not trying to roll the dice on that.
So yeah... >50W, 16Ω, warmth.
I'm not gonna worry about "american" or "british" tonality.

Things that came to mind that I have not tried are:

a weber version of the G12-65. I dun wanna drop the $ for the celestion heritage g12-65. Anyways, that or the weber G12M-70 type. both are recommended for "taking the egde off," it seems.

a warehouse HM75 or ET65 might work also?

The eminence swamp thang or texas heat, or the tonker on the brit side. I thought about the wizard but I heard some people call it kind of 'fizzy'. not sure if it's true or not.

I'm not sure about V30 types... the strong upper mids might not be what I'm looking for this time around. My DSL has upper mids enough as it is, that's for sure.

a scumback 65W version of the M75 type sounds like it would rule, but $170+ shipping is a bit harsh.

so throw out some suggestions, please.

You can still find 65s used as well. The 65 or eqivilent is probably what you want. Warm for a Celestion but still has the GB bark. They are 97db's too.

A Kendrick Black Frame Speaker, if you can find one, is especially warm and meaty with a bit of the singing sustain typical of an aged alnico (although its ceramic). It also isn't really loud compared to the typical modern guitar speaker. It's like having 3 or 4dbs of attenuation built in. As I recall they were about 80 watts power handling each.

60 or 65 watts rated speaker is plenty for a 50 watt MV tube amp.

Celestion Gold for the win! :p

Oh... I see you wanted more than 50 watts and not too expensive. Guess that's out...

Re: speaker hunt; warmth needed

I installed Celestion V30's in my TSL602 to tame some of that hi end buzz. The V30's were waaay better than the stock speakers. More punchy mids, tighter low end and smoother highs that don't give you an ear ache. I think it was a great match for the TSL, I'm willing to bet it'd be a great match for the DSL as well.

I'm also looking for the same kinda spkrs. Was considering the Swamp Thang or Tonker.

Re: speaker hunt; warmth needed

From the eminence line I'd put money on the Cannabis Rex or maybe the Lynch Super V. If you're after a 'fat full rolled off top' then that says "hemp cone" to me, not a Celestion variant.

The Lynch speaker is based on Fane's and the 4x12 cab I played loaded with those was drool inducing. Huge chunky bottom and super smooth top... perfect amount of midrange bite. If/when I can ever justify getting another cab its probably gonna be loaded with those.

The Rex sounds great in my buddies dlx reverb, and I've run other heads through that cab... like my Rivera and they're all great though nothing at all like any celestion I've ever heard.

Tone Tubby also has a new $100 hemp cone driver, though I think all their stuff is in the 25-35 watt range. Amazingly smooooooth though. Never harsh.

Oh yeah, hemp cone speakers are made with hemp paper. And it certainly makes a difference...

Here, check this article out to learn everything you never wanted to know about speakers. Not sure why its linking to page 20... just go to the top.

Its a different sound and its not for everyone... certainly people who want super high wattage speakers, like EV's or whatever for country or metal likely won't dig hemp cones. Anyone who's ear is used to old Jensens or Altecs might be able to get into it... its a completely different ballgame from Greenbacks or V30's as well. But its a cool ballgame... and if you want something radically different...

+3 for the Cannabis rex. . . it's a warm sound, but very clear and detailed, not muddy. Actually "slightly rounder kinda bass and definitely a rolled off top end" is a pretty good description of it.

Re: speaker hunt; warmth needed

the cannabis rex handles 50W according to the specs. Would i not run a risk of blowing it?

I would be concerned about that. A definite risk. I would still recommend looking into a Swamp Thang. Sounds like what you want tone wise and it handles 150 watts. Only thing is...it is high sensitivity (102) and you said you like low sens.

Re: speaker hunt; warmth needed

Sounds to me like you just need to work at your amp settings a bit more. You can get warmth out of any speaker.
