Speaker question for a 1X12 tube combo

Hi guys,

I just bought an old Traynor YCV40 amp cause I love them so much. I used to have a Wine Red edition and missed it ever since I sold it.

The WR edition had a VIntage 30 speaker in it, which was more present and clear than the Seventy-80. Still, I have the impression, though it's been a while, that the V30 lacks a bit of tight bottom end. Am I right or is it the open back combo that gives me that impression?

So I'd like to change the 70/80 now, but there's so many options.

Are Emminence Red Coat as good as Celestions? Basically, what I'm looking for is a V30 that as tighter bottom end and a little less honky in the mids while being as clear.

I really like the Wizard in all clip I can find on the net. Hard to know if it has tight bottom end though.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

if you have an open back combo and you want big bottom that holds together and less mids, then go for a g12t75

V30s need a closed back cab, IMO. A G12h30 would rock an open cab.

Re: Speaker question for a 1X12 tube combo

I agree, V30's sound much better in closed back cabs. I just traded out a V30 in my 18 Watt open back combo for a WGS Reaper (their G12H30). Love it!

Re: Speaker question for a 1X12 tube combo

But at 30 watts, isn't the G12H30 not powerful enough for a 40 watts combo? That's why I was thinking of going Eminence Red Coat, since they all have higher wattages.

I'm currently thinking Wizard or Governor. I also like the clips I heard of the GB128, but I'd be afraid to go down that route. I don't want to save money at the expense of sound quality.

Good point. Didn't realize your amp is 40 watts. WGS also has the Reaper HP which is good for 50 watts. Sorry, I don't have any first hand experience with Eminence products, but my friends over at the wattkins.com forums speak very highly of the Wizard.

Re: Speaker question for a 1X12 tube combo

IIRC, a speaker's handling capacity is double the rated wattage. Therefore, 30W speaker means 60W handling capacity. You should be fine, provided I'm right - I'll let someone else confirm that.

.....that really is general talk.
Anyways it also depends on how loud you play!
Have used my Hiwatt DR201 with a single greenback from time to time....
At low volumes...hehe

I've got a YCV40 . . . the Cannabis Rex really suits that amp for anything bluesy/jazzy. It's fantastic when paired with the matching closed back cab with a v30. If you just stick a v30 in the open back YCV40, it will always have an upper mids honk.

Re: Speaker question for a 1X12 tube combo

Thanks guys. Yes, the V30 alone is a bit honky and spongy in the low end. I actually think the 70-80 have a more solid lower end.

I really liked my Wine Red but I remember it as a bright amp (I didn't have the ext. cab). The black YCV40 is not as bright, it's way fuller in the low end, so I guess the V30 didn't help.

I'll check out the Cannabis Rex but I now really lean towards the Wizard, which is said to have the solid low end of the Private Jack combined with the presence of the Governor... normal since the G12H30 is said to be a cross between the Greenback and the V30.
