speaker question

I may be purchasing an amp head, and thought it would be interesting to buy an unloaded cab and pick out some speakers for it. I'd be looking to do a 2x12 cabinet, and was just wondering about ohm ratings, what the difference is, and what I would need for this cab setup? Also any tips as far as speaker suggestions and wiring them would be appreciated, as this is all new for me!
I'm pretty much a blues/rock player and stick to that for the most part.

Re: speaker question

Check out avatar cabinets. You can get any type of cabinet you want and they'll put any speakers you want in it. (as long as it's Celestion or Eminence) They very affordable to.

The ohms you'll need depends on the amp head you get. Is there a particular amp you're interested in?

Re: speaker question

I'm gettting a Carvin 100 watt head, and it actually has an adjustable ohm rating switch for 4, 8 and 16 ohms, but I'm curious as to the difference between them and what type I should select?

Re: speaker question

With 2x12's, the usuall set up is two 16 ohm speakers wired in parallel. This gives 8 ohms. You then set the amp to 8 ohms.

If you use two different 8 ohm cab's, then you have the option of running both cabs at the same time, at a total load of 4 ohms.

If you already have a 16 ohm cab, then you would probably want your 2x12 to be 16 ohm also, so it could be used at the same time. In that case you would use two 8 ohm speakers wired in series, for a 16 ohm 2x12.

With a 100 watt head, you will need the speakers to be rated, no less than 50 watts each.
