Speaker Recommendation

Well, I'm kinda changing everything at once right now. But anyway, I have a Genz-Benz G-Flex 2x12 with my ENGL Screamer 50. I've never tried any other speakers with this cab, or any other quality cabs with the head, so I'm not quite sure how it adds up. The stock speaker is an Eminence made for Genz Benz that I can't find any information on.

What I'm looking for is a little less brightness, softer highs, but still lively and balanced sounding, with lots of definition. Tight bass, not boomy. About mid volume break up. I like the complexity of the Vox sound, but I'm not sure how much of that comes from the Celestion Blue speaker. So I was considering the Weber Blue Dog for that reason. Other speakers I'm considering are the Eminence Legend GB12, Legend V12, Blue Tick Hound, and Private Jack. I'm not sure whether I want an American or British cone, alnico or ceramic.

I play a variety of styles, mainly modern rock like A Perfect Circle, VAST, Porcupine Tree, Dredg, and Pink Floyd. I also like Cream a lot. And some metal like Opeth and In Flames. I play about 50/50 distorted/clean.

Also, I'm not sure if putting new tubes in (they're about 8 months old, moderate use, stock tubes) would make more of a difference?

Re: Speaker Recommendation

i doubt your tubes are in too bad of a shape, so i wouldnt worry about them yet. go listen to speakers with your head and see what you like. most places wont mind if you bring in your own gear to try out cabs. you dont have to tell them that you are really only checking out the speakers

Re: Speaker Recommendation

Id definitely stick to ceramic rather than alnico...because as far as i know alnico speakers wouldnt be that crash hot for rock and metal stuff, and im assuming with an ENGL Screamer you will still be wanting to bash out a bit of metal ;)

Re: Speaker Recommendation

The Blue Dog is Weber's take on a Celestion G12 Alnico Blue. It's a nice speaker but not as bright and llively as the Celestion. The Weber has kind of a "thumby" tone to it...like a big plucky thumb.

The Celestion Vintage 30 was Celestions attempt at building a ceramic version of the alnico blue.

But it's bright...you might like the G12H30 more.

The Celestion G12H30 is closely related but has better bass, thicker & more textured mids and smoother highs. It's my favorite 12" ceramic speaker.

A combination of one Vintage 30 and one G12H30 is killer too!
