Speaker review: Hellatones in twin!!

I have a twin that I have had a v30 and a Greenback in. The tone was fair. I have wanted to take out the green back for awhile due to it's lower wattage rating. I ordered some speakers fron Avatar and put them in the twin. I put in the hellatone 30 and hellaone 60. WOW!! The speakers are celestion v30 and g12h30s that are "aged" or broken in. It really opened up the middle, and especially the bottom end of this amp. I am totally tonally impressed with this setup.

The amp is a 72 twin blackfaced and the reverb is global. The left channel has been modded to sound more "marshally". I left the master intact on this amp. I jumped the left and right channel, and used a spina modded ts-9 and put it through it's workouts. The amp, with ease, gave me tones from older ZZ top to XXX and rythmeen ZZ. 60's, and 70's tones were not a problem. Some 80's tones were achievable. I will try a V-twin through it in the next few days. When playing an A chord with a little bit of palm muting this setup really had a low end presence, and thump that it lacked before.

I put the green back in a 2x12 matchless cab that is paired with a g12h. I will try to test that set up out with the THD Univalve. But I am thinking that the greenback may get retired.

The v30 g12H combo is hard to beat. If you have a twin that is to shrill in the upper end, and lacks low end go with this combo. :dance: :burnout:

A little bit, i think. I am not sure exactly what you mean, so I will try to explain what i hear.

At lower volumes (either amp, or rolled off guitar volume) the amp still gives you a "Fender" clean tone. With these speakers the high end isn't so sharp. (more later) when the master was dialed in to over 70%, and then the channel volumes were set to a lightly driven tone I could get break up with heavier pick attack.

This is were the tube screamer comes in. Hitting the tube screamer was like hitting the launch button on the space shuttle. I immediatley had clean to heavily overdriven tones at the roll of the volume knob (with Plenty-O-Bottom end thump). I could then dial in more pre amp volume to achieve a "searing" lead tone, or a E. Johnson leadish sound.

I also did try putting the pre amp, or channel volume at 10 (100%) and dialing in the master for a good room volume, but I have never felt that the twin excelled at this type of distortion, so I won't even go into explaining it.

*about the high end thing and speakers. I originally had jensen reissue speaker in this amp. p12N or c12N. whatever one would find in a 65twin reissue. I also have the fancy groove tube 6L6GE quartet. the combo wasn't really a great "rock" set up. I found that the amp was SUPER loud, and had monster headtroom. It takes a lot to get tube distortion with those tubes. It didn't like to break up. I also noted that i was dialing out a lot of the highs, due to EAR PAIN. I thind the celestion combo tamed the amp and gave me a useable tone for blues and rock. they especially gave it a lot more bottom end, and that is in an open backed cabinet.

thats the complete opposite of what i want. I need infinite headroom with my future twin. I almost dont even plan on playing it with distortion, save with light smoothing with my TS9 tone rolled back a bit.

I'd probably put 2 weber michigan electrovoice replicas in it, 100 something watts each of power handling and insane clean bassy sound.

thats the complete opposite of what i want. I need infinite headroom with my future twin. I almost dont even plan on playing it with distortion, save with light smoothing with my TS9 tone rolled back a bit.

I'd probably put 2 weber michigan electrovoice replicas in it, 100 something watts each of power handling and insane clean bassy sound.

get a groove tube 6l6GE quartet and that will help with the headroom. mucho clean power.

I've been wanting to buy some G12H30's to throw in a few Bogner cabs, but I've been out of gear buying mode for awhile. The Hellatones aren't Celestions, are they? I wonder if the Hellatone would be a better value than the G12H30? My main thing is that I hate 'cone cry', where a certain note on the fretboard causes a speaker cab to resonate weird. I also hate low end farts. As long as speakers sound great, and don't do either of those things, I'm fine.

A 120 watt Bogner head can turn a Humvee on it's side, so the speakers have to handle all of that.

Actually, they are celestions. Stamp on the frame and everything. I think avatar must have a deal with celestion. the v30 and a g12h30 are the hella tone 60, and 30 respectively. Avatar does "something" to them for 24 hours that ends up aging them.

I don't know what "cone cry" is, but i think I am familiar with low end fart. I havn't noticed any farting, but I don't know what cone cry is. Is it some type of high pitched feedback or squeal?

The hellatones are 79.00 were the v30 and g12h30 are 82, or 84.00. a little price break. The hellatones are free shipping also.
