Speakers for ValveKing?

Could I put a Celestion Vintage 30 and a G12H Heritage in a Peavey ValveKing 2x12 combo?
Is the amp too powerful for these speakers?
(The amp is a tube 100w if you didn't know already.)

Sorry, I don't know much about amps and speakers, haha.

Re: Speakers for ValveKing?

I have a 2x12 cab with V30's for my 5150II and that's 120w. You should be fine with that.

Re: Speakers for ValveKing?

Yeah, I thought it would be okay.
But, am I right in thinking that the V30s are 60watt and the G12hs are only 30?
60 + 30 = 90watts, does it work like that?

Also, will the V30 be louder than the g12h? or will they be the same volume and the g12h just break up earlier?

Well, it doesn't exactly work like that, each speaker will received half the wattage put out by the amp, so you could be putting up to fifty watts into the H30, if you run loud levels, you could blow it. - I run two greenbacks (25 watts each) with my 60 watt Marshall and have had no problems. As long as you run the amp at reasonable volume levels. I also have a cab with the H30/V30 setup, and btw, it sounds great- both of those speakers are rated at 100db sensitivity, so one doesn't really overpower the other, although to your ears the H30 may sound a bit louder, due to it's wider response. Those two speakers work well together, one seems to pick of the slack of the other and vice-versa.
Also remember that Celestion tends to underate their speakers, I suppose for liability claims.

Re: Speakers for ValveKing?

Changing speakers out and mixing speakers is a cool way to change up your sound. But with a 100-watt tube power amp, you want to have speakers with a lot higher capacity. Also, as long as the speakers can handle what the amp puts out, the volume of each speaker is best compared by the sensitivity (SPL) rather than the individual watt-handling. It is best to keep the sensitivity within a difference of 2 or less. I like Eminence speakers.

Re: Speakers for ValveKing?

Oh cool thanks.
Dr.Mavashi, do you mean the G12T-75? That would be cool but there is a 3dB difference in sensitivity between the two.
I really wanted a G12H because of the great bottom end and the vintage tones it has. As marvar said: "Those two speakers work well together, one seems to pick of the slack of the other and vice-versa."

Grr... If only the G12H could handle 20 more watts.

Yeah, this speaker combo was recomended to me here as good option for X pattern in 4X12 cab, so I am interested in what those two would in ValveKing 100watt combo since that's what my patna' is getting.

Re: Speakers for ValveKing?

I tried a vintage 30 in my 50 watt valveking, and I really didn't think that it made enough difference to leave it in, so I put the original speaker back in. I have put Celestions in three other amps and it made a big improvement, but not this one. A full set of JJ-tubes did improve it 100%.

Re: Speakers for ValveKing?

Yeah. Obviously, I would change the tubes, a good speaker will only amplify the bad tubes.
Have you tried it with the JJs and the celestion? :fingersx:
