Spina-modded DS1 versus FullToneFDII/Barber-DD/MS V-Twin

I honestly can say that John (Stratdeluxer97) did a terrific job. I don't know what he did, and now I am looking for a used TS9 to send to him (BTW if you have one handy, just shoot a pm ;) ).

His is the least focused, the most clear one. It is as if the tubes get into overdrive at lower volumes. And in fact this was what I have been searching for all those years. The second I stepped on my MesaBoogie V-Twin, or Barber Direct Drive, or FullTone Full Drive II, I know the tone will have NOTHING to do with what I hear clean. Yet with Spina modded DS1 of mine well it is as if somebody just increased the volume so that the powertubes start cooking. And the great thing is that the controls are quite responsive so that when the vol on the amp is increased, one can reduce the difference from none to DS1 tones by reducing the drive on the pedal.

It even does work as a boost, in fact does a great job if you know what you are doing. Just reduce the drive, adjust the tone, and increase the output from the pedal. The rest is done by the amp.

I have tried it with my JJ/Celestion Blue modded Blues Jr. and my beloved 95 LP standard. The result was instant Marshall-like tones (I'd say JTM kinda) from this setup. It can give the sparkling bright Beano tone, and Kossof's magnificient tones pretty well. At least the results are good enough for me.

Then I tried it with my favorite strat. There I think I need more time to digest what it can do. But as I said above, using it for semi-clean boost worked miracles right away. BTW I am not too fond of overdriven strat tones.

Finally, JD in my tele through this setup sounds beautiful. I mean the whole clarity thing was most noticable with the tele bridge. Because I hate it when overdrive pedals I have turn my tele (that I know sounds GREAT with the blues jr. cranked) bridge into a focused tight tone. The magnitude of that change is quite considerable. Now I can use an overdrive pedal and go lower than the 7th position without the high E and B sounding thin.

Man you've outdone yourself. I honestly mean it. But the above does not have anything to do with seeing you as a friend. I mean what I say, and hope to make an honest assessment of the result.

I gotta try this pedal with my other amps, Bassman 59RI, and Peavey classic 30. John by the way you don't have a tube amp don't you. Cyber twin is what I remember you have. If so and if you have not done it yet, you gotta hear the results on a tube amp brother, they are superb.

Another thing: As John has found out, mine is not a regular DS1. It is old, got it like 89 or 90 don't remember. Have not used it for quite a time, and believe if it were to be that good, I would have. Anyway, mine is a made in taiwan model, but unlike others has some of the japanese construction features (short board as opposed to a longer board). John says that could make it brighter and be somewhere between the regular DS1 and TS9. Since I have it I don't care, but thought that you guys should know about that. But maybe that's because why it can sound like FullTone2 and Barber DD at the same time you know.

To sum up, I think it clearly beats FTFDII and B-DD for what they do. MesaBoogie V-twin comparison is not that fair, because that beast has much more gain. Still for my tastes I'd go with Spina-modded DS1.

Re: Spina-modded DS1 versus FullToneFDII/Barber-DD/MS V-Twin

I think John's DS-1 is MUCH better than the V-Twin, personally.

Re: Spina-modded DS1 versus FullToneFDII/Barber-DD/MS V-Twin

I just got mine (sd-1 the yellow one) and I couldn't have put it any better. I have been running it into a Twin, and the amp grew marshall sized balls. It also retained it's cleans when rolled off. I am very impressed. I have a DS-1 that I would like to send him, and I also would like to send him a ts-9. Have to make sure he makes it through the Hurricanes. One can never have too many pedals. they are like a painters colors, and john makes some very cool colors!!

Re: Spina-modded DS1 versus FullToneFDII/Barber-DD/MS V-Twin

I've got several Spina-modded pedals including the Boss DS-1, SD-1, Ibanez TS-5, and TS-9. All of 'em are excellent and have tones that they couldn't have imagined while stock. I just bought a Boss OS-2 that I'm going to send John's way. I talked with him on the phone a week or so back about the pedal and he was pretty excited about what he was getting it to do after tweaking it some.
Check out John's thread about it:

Sounds cool to me....I'm gonna try one.

I found the same thing happening when I used it with my Les Paul and Fender DR. All of a sudden it sounded like I was playing a Marshall. But just wait until you try his TS-9 mod. It oozes tone for days!

Agreed. That's also what my personal tastes are telling me.

Scott_F, thanks. :)

54stratlover and midniteman, good to hear that. In fact I was wondering how a SD-1 and TS9 both modded would compare against each other. Big differences? And a tubescreamer into a twin sounds YUMMY! :D

good review, dr. b
I tend to like the modded DS-1 with teles, and the SD-1 with strats, but the TS-9 reviews make me want to send John one of those, too. In the end, strats and tubescreamers are just a great combination.

Re: Spina-modded DS1 versus FullToneFDII/Barber-DD/MS V-Twin

Thanks guys...I Love reading all of your reviews about the mods...I must say that the last few days have been very trying, frustrating, busy, and caused more un-needed anxiety in my life..All these hurricanes..4 in like 6 weeks or whatever it's been...

Anyway...Doc..All of my amps are tube amps...I Play through vintage non=master Marshalls,BF Fender amps, and the Cyber Twin has an all tube preamp...My tone is all about tube amps and always has been..The pedals just enhance it..Sorry I have to cut this short,I'm on my buddie's computer in a different town..I hope we get our power back real soon because I don't have a computer access..Please don't give up on me..It's been crazy with all the overtime I've had to work and just life lately..But I'll get through it all....Always do...Thanks to Doc,Curly,Bobby, and all of my buddie's for the great reviews...I'm very happy reading all this..Means alot to me!

I am thinking of a SD-1 and TS9. But I gotta get them first, I wish I kept mine! :smack: Anyway, the worst case scenario is that I get it online shipped directly to you. Meanwhile I am keeping an eye open for used ones. And if you were to see something just think of me, and be sure that I am gonna get it. ;)

Doc...Check with www.samash.com as they had SD-1s last week for $39.99...I bought another one for stock here at home....

TS9s are always pretty pricey though...Figure $100 new and around 60 to $70 used...They aren't cheap normally..

Re: Spina-modded DS1 versus FullToneFDII/Barber-DD/MS V-Twin

SD97's modded DS-1 sounds great through a POD as well.
