SPLAWN AMP has arrived!

Re: SPLAWN AMP has arrived!

Oh for gods sakes T.O. its about time. After all that jibberish about your Rivera you finally got smart and got the Splawn. I told you a year ago that was the way to go. See I'm always right. :beerchug:

I haven't been posting here much and heard through the grapevine you made the switch, now I look forward to hearing some of your band clips with GOOD TONE!

Nice.

Later,

Craig

Long time no speak, dude! Modest as always, lol :D

It's going to take a few days until I get everything sorted, and then I can make a proper clip for you all.

Craig, I have a Q for you while I got you. What settings are you using on your amp? You have an Emminence-loaded cab, right?

Re: SPLAWN AMP has arrived!

My clips really suck, but thats my own fault.. Typically I run everything at about 12 O'clock and adjust from there. Usually bass up the highest:

Presence: 12-1 ocl****
Bass: 4 oclock
treble: 12 oclock
mids: between 12-2 oclock depending on the stage and room.
preamp: 12-4 oclock depending on my chops that evening. :)

Re: SPLAWN AMP has arrived!

Play with the mic placement. IMO it sounds too tiny when it's on axis. Go off axis a bit, about halfway between the center and the edge of the cone. I actually like to place it so the mic looks like it is laying on the grill so the mic pattern spreads out across the speaker. I hope this description makes sense..lol.

Re: SPLAWN AMP has arrived!

Someone over at the BK Forum asked for a Miracle Man thrash clip, and DSS asked for something heavier, so here is my 2nd attempt at recording the Splawn. Different setup this time around:

I will apologize in advance for the lameness; I'm not a thrash guitarist!

The rig used is pictured below:

SplawnRecordingSetup5Dec05.jpg

Guitar is a MM loaded Kamikaze 4 with a Gajic Custom neck. The only pedal used was compressor by HBE, the Compressor Retro. Amp is a Splawn Quick Rod. 2nd Gear was used for the rhythm parts, and the lead was recorded with the amp in 3rd gear. Cabinet is a Marshall 1922 2x12. I had to record it in my son's room, and couldn't drag a 4x12 in there. So, there's some bottom end missing, of course.

I used two mics on the cabinet: An AKG lipstick mic close up on the grille, and an Oktava 319 about 12" away, and then blended them in when I mixed. I was getting a bit of a ground problem tonight, but I tracked anyway, so there's some noise at the end of the clip.

Re: SPLAWN AMP has arrived!

I dig it! I really, really like the lead tone you get out of it. The rhythm tone is pretty damn cool too... Now I know what kind of amp to get if I join a straight thrash band!

Re: SPLAWN AMP has arrived!

That's more like it. That tone kicks @ss. Fat, thick, juicy. Nice.

Thanx! Part of this whole process is learning what works and doesn't work; the amp is totally new, and I haven't even gone through all my mics yet, let alone guitar/pedal combinations.

LOL ... remind me one day to tell you the story of the note that was slipped under my door one day when I was recording solos for the TO album ... :D

and you said you don't do pinch harmonics... ;)
I don't! That's a prime example of my f'd up way of doing 'em, lol
