Splitting Humbuckers....

Hey Fellas, anyone out there splitting a Pearly Gates neck???

I just picked up a Big Apple Strat which has STOCK Pearly Gates bridge/'59 neck. In positions #2 & #4, it splits each humbucker into single coil. The Pearly Gates bridge sounds pretty good & "Stratty", but the split '59 is just so-so.

I've got a PGn in another guitar & was thinking of swapping it out with the '59.

ANY THOUGHTS????

I'd like to have a good 'bucker sound with a liveable single coil sound.....a lot to ask, I know.......but what fun would it be then???? :)

Re: Splitting Humbuckers....

I used to have a PG(n) in my double fat strat, and it actually split fairly well. It had a great clean tone, and a decent blusey type grind when pushed. I ultimately replaced it with an APH (which doesn't split as well) because I used the full neck HB position, and didn't like the midrange of the PG for what I wanted.

I think it's a good alternative if you find the 59 doesn't fit your taste.

Re: Splitting Humbuckers....

Thanks Jeff. I just got the guitar, so I'll play around with it a while. Initially, I think it can be better, but I'll leave it alone before making it my "Pearly Gates Strat" !!!

Re: Splitting Humbuckers....

I have a PG set in my LP that I split and it sounds very nice. It's not exactly stratty at the neck, but it does clean up really well and it gets a lot of chime when split.

Thanks Benjy....that sounds what I'm looking for. I know I'll never get a Strat clone, but something that cleans up nicely but also has some bite is what I want.

I'll have to play around with it a bit more & then consider the changes.

Thanks again!

Re: Splitting Humbuckers....

Well......I replaced the '59 neck with the Pearly Gates neck & it splits very nicely.

My problem now is Pos #3....I don't care for the PGn/PGb combined.

OH WELL..............I think I'll save up my pennies & just put together a single coil pickguard!
