Spontaneous Amp recovery!

So, I thought it was my H2O pedal. Apparently not!

Anyway, today I popped on my H&K TM18. The in/out fades of my H2O start happening with my Tech21 DLA. ^%$%#$!

But...I collect my senses, turned everything on. Let it all warm up and ran through a serious trouble shoot.
- Straight in - check
- All channels - check
- All wattages - check
- Footswitch - check- FX loop - check!

I have basically figured out that it just needs a couple of minutes of warmup!!! All good. If I slam it on and start playing...hinky weirdness.

It might not be, but odd cutting in and out on a tube amp is usually a tube going bad. It might be a good opportunity to get your tube rolling on...

Good news that the pedals are all fine and the amp seems fine too.

Sometimes solder joint and tube sockets become conductive after they warm up -be it a cold joint or tension fit.

Nope -in fact they are probably the 2 easiest.

my Belair had a howl some years back
touching the solder joints on the tube sockets with a hot iron solved the problem

took longer to disassemble the amp than to fix it

I was soooo missing Guitar > H&K > VS Chorus/Delay.

Shame I don't play much Rush. It would kill for that! Maybe I'll relearn Limelight or something...

Considering that it is a tube amp, yes, they need to warm up for a few minutes before playing through them. That's standard practice. Turn it on, leave it on standby.

You running the effects through the loop? If so clean your jacks in the loop!! Fought that gremlin more than a few times!!

Everytime I perform a tube replacement, I always inspect the solder joints on the tube sockets, not only heat, but vibration can cause some sketchy behavior. There have been a couple of times where I have had to touch the tube socket solder joint(s) with a hot soldering iron.....

My Randall RM50 does something very similar once in a while. That one ended up being in the fx loop. Every few months or so it will start gaining volume and then drop back down. It'll do it for a minutes, just up and down.

I have to get contact cleaner and spray all 4 effects loop jacks and cables, and run them in and out a few times while wiping the cable end.

It could easily be something else, but it's a good thing to check anyways. Doesn't cost you anything but a little time.
